Hello,
I know there are many articles on the Internet that cover this but I just wanted to open up some discussion as I will probably have additional follow up questions.
I'm in the process of getting my homeserver set up.
The server will act as a file server and media server. I'll mostly be storing data on my server but I'll also be occasionally streaming video.
I currently have Open Media Vault running for my OS and I'll most likely end up setting up the disks in a RAID1 configuration.
My ultimate goal is to never lose my data.
I understand there are benefits and drawbacks to both EXT4 and ZFS
So for I understand,
Which file system would you consider the best for my needs and what should I be aware of when considering the filesystem you recommend?
Please add your thoughts and comment below.
Thanks in advance!
TL:DR Should I use EXT4 or ZFS for my file server / media server. Please explain the reasons for your choice.
That would be a DSL connection to the internet.
This is correct I've made an edit to the top post to help people when trying to diagnose and solve my issue. Thanks for helping me with this
Quote from 1uke_: “I can confirm that I am connected to my internet via ethernet cable.”
Do you really have a working internet connection? There is no cable in your router's WAN port... (last picture)
I think it must work differently over here in the UK, we connect our internet in to our phone line via an RJ11 cable and into a micro filter. It works but you can't see this on the picture.
Hello OMV forum,
I have created a USB installation drive as I want to install Open Media Vault to my HP ProLiant N54L.
All seems to go well until the installer tries to download some files at which point it fails and stops the installation process.
I have included some screen shots so you can see what happens.
This is the first screen that I see when the installation fails.
I can confirm that I am connected to my internet via ethernet cable.
If anyone could help or make any suggestions I'd be truly grateful.
Please feel free to ask me any additional questions.
I feel lost with out having my file server
EDIT I have tested the cable and broadband connection with a laptop. The laptop doesn't have a problem loading a web page when I connect via ethernet
1. The benefit of an SSD would be it is considerably faster than HDD. OMV may be snappier in handling, but I cannot say one way or the other as I installed OMV to SSD and don't know how it would handle on an HDD.
2. See above.
3. As small as you can…
I plan on using this SSD as I can't find anything smaller or cheaper.
Any thoughts on that particular drive @gderf?
1 - Not really.
2 - The web interface might be a little faster.
3 - None of my systems use more than 8 GB of space on the OS drive.
If you are going to use flash/ssd, make sure to use the openmediavault-flashmemory plugin.
I plan on using this SSD. Any thoughts on that particular drive @ryecoaaron?
Hello,
Background info.
I currently have a HP Proliant n54l microserver. After trying out Freenas I'm switching over to Open Media Vault (OMV).
Questions
I plan to run OMV from a Solid State Disk (SSD) here are my questions
Thanks for your help in advance
