I know this is a dated thread, but I have having the same issues logging in as the aforementioned user. Yes, I downloaded the ISO from source referenced. Neither the 'admin' nor the 'root' login works. I'm having the same issues on the both the x64 as well as the Raspberry Pi 3 build. Are you not able to login via the CLI?
