You're right, it seems that not having some of the listed packages made the whole thing error out instead of just ignoring the missing ones. After removing the specific packages you've mentioned, the UI is working again.

Apologies in advance if solution to this has been posted. I've tried looking through the forum to no avail.
I followed the exact instructions outlined here by ryecoaaron to upgrade from OMV 4 to 5.
Visiting the omv ip I am greeted by the login screen. I can login to my user but upon logging in to admin I get the following error:

It appears I'm not the only one with this issue: TechnoDadLife also had this same issue here, but while his other problems got addressed, I don't believe the UI login one was.
What you suggest would only make a difference if you set OMV to spin down your drives. General consensus seems to be that it's better to not spin down. This is also OMV's default setting.
Feel free to do your own research on hdd spin down and make a decision for yourself. I don't think anyone could give you a "best practice" answer because everyone's usage patterns are different.
