Upgrade issues (after a long day I messed up big time)

  • Current system info:
    HP N40L (1.5GHz, 2GB RAM)
    2x WD Red 4TB (data)
    1x WD Green 1TB (data)
    1x WD Blue 500GB (data)
1x OCZ Agility 3 60GB (boot, plus Greyhole landing zone)
    OMV 0.5.60

So, I knew my OMV box hadn't been updated for a long time (years) but it's been ticking along quite nicely so without really thinking, I connected in via SSH and ran omv-release-upgrade.
It complained about needing to uninstall NUT; "no problem", I thought and continued with the process.

Then various things happened, some errors popped up which my mind accepted happily as being minor things I could fix later, and then I rebooted.

Then nothing. The box booted but I had no network connection.

Went digging for a screen to connect to see what it was saying and on boot I now get

    Code
    [FAIL] Mounting local filesystems... failed

followed by a load of other issues which I'm ignoring for the time being as they're probably all due to the FSs not mounting.

I'm on 0.5.60 and I'd like to get up to the current stable release after which I promise to stay up to date with backups and upgrades.

I'd post my fstab and mtab now but with no console connection and no remote access card in this server, it'd take me a bit of time to copypasta it all off the screen.

    tldr:
Tried to do one line upgrade, now filesystems not mounting.

You can always post screenshots from phone camera. That is the output of dpkg -l | grep openm

    omv 7.0.5-1 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.8 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.13 | compose 7.1.6 | k8s 7.1.0-3 | cputemp 7.0.1 | mergerfs 7.0.4

omv-extras.org plugins source code and issue tracker - github - changelogs

  • I wasn't sure how acceptable that was on this forum.

Attached are fstab, mtab, the uuid of my disks and the output of dpkg -l | grep openm
(Somewhat truncated due to the low res screen. If necessary, I'll see what I can do about getting a widescreen close enough to plug in.)

    Thanks for taking a look.

Change any occurrence of squeeze to wheezy in /etc/apt/sources.list
Change any occurrence of sardaukar to kralizec in all files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

    Then apt-get update

If that goes ok, apt-get dist-upgrade.

  • As I get no network on boot, doing apt-get-update will be tricky.

During the partial upgrade it did, it does however appear to have changed my sources.list and sources.list.d/ to wheezy and kralizec respectively.

What is the output of: ifconfig -a

You can try one of the two options (second option may require some changes to the IPs):

    dhclient -v eth0

    or

    ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.34
    route add default gw 192.168.1.1
    echo "nameserver 192.168.1.1" > /etc/resolv.conf

  • Thanks for that, dhclient -v eth0 worked fine.

After regaining network and running through updates and upgrades, I appear to be back up and running (on 1.19), including my nice auto-rip CD functions!

Now I have the fun of checking everything else :|

Thanks a lot for your help! I got so concerned with the filesystem errors, I didn't think to try just getting network back up and pressing on with upgrading.

I would upgrade to 2.x. This doesn't involve a distro upgrade so it should go well. Just use omv-release-upgrade.
