My case only has room for 3 HDD's, I will have 2xhdd in raid1, I would like to keep the other sata free for future storage, obviously I could use it for an SSD to install omv on but i was wondering if there were any disadvantages, wear rate/transfer speeds etc to installing on a usb flash drive?

usb flash drives do wear out but the flashmemory plugin will help them live for a long time (years). If you backup your install and have a spare usb drive laying around, you shouldn't have any problems.

yep. clonezilla works well. Although I have had systems use the same usb drive for 4+ years.
