KVM-Plugin: CD/DVD notvisible

  • Hi,

I tried to add a CD/DVD drive to one of my KVMs.

In the VM section I can add an optical drive (/dev/sr0) via VM -Optical - add host drive, but later on I cant see it in my VM. I tried it with several different Linux and I always get the same result.

Does somebody know how to overcome this problem?

Having no info about the VM, did you try shutting it down? New hardware devices typically aren't recognized until you power cycle the VM.

    I also did a restart!

I did say power cycle not restart but restart is probably enough.

I also tried 3 different CD/DVD drives and always removed the disc and always creaed a new optical (and removed the old one).

I have no problem with it.

    root@deb11:~# lsscsi

    [0:0:0:0] cd/dvd QEMU QEMU DVD-ROM 2.5+ /dev/sr0

    [1:0:0:0] cd/dvd QEMU QEMU DVD-ROM 2.5+ /dev/sr1

    [2:0:0:0] cd/dvd QEMU QEMU DVD-ROM 2.5+ /dev/sr2

What is the output of: sudo lsscsi and post the VM's xml.

This is the output I got from lsscsi:

Can you post the output of that from the guest? And what about the VM's xml?

  • On the VM I get the following feedback from lsscsi:

    [0:0:0:0] cd/dvd QEMU DVD-ROM 2.5+ /dev/sr0

    [1:0:0:0] cd/dvd QEMU DVD-ROM 2.5+ /dev/sr1

And this is the XML for the same VM:

I hope this helps to identify a solution for this problem!

I still don't see the problem. The xml for the VM looks correct and the guest is reporting the two drives properly. What isn't working?

The DVD drive is not available/recognized in the VM!

lsscsi does not agree. Linux knows the drives are attached to the VM. What isn't the drive recognized by?

  • Meanwhile I found out the following:

    * For one VM (Fedora 36) I can see the CD/DVD, but if I change the CD/DVD the system still shows the content of the first CD. It doesnt recognize that there was a change.

    * For both VMs I have the situation that Audio CDs are not detected.

There isn't much I can do about this from the plugin. It is adding the drive just like virt-manager does. Maybe you need to eject from guest OS or virsh from the host? I don't have a setup I can test this on right at the moment but not sure I could change anything anyway.

For both VMs I have the situation that Audio CDs are not detected.

Are you passing the same drive to more than one VM? I understand the plugin lets you do this but I don't know if that works correctly.
