I signed up for dropbox to get file once but I don't use it.
I signed up for mediafire as well because I want to make a plugin for that (for offsite backup reasons). I don't use it because the api still has some issues.
I had the webdav plugin installed but never used it.
If I want to share a file, I either email it or put it on my web server since I host the hardware. I guess I am old

I understand your point. I don't think it's old-fashioned, for me it's just nice being able to view my photos / listen to my music through a neat web interface from all around the world. I guess that's the only difference between cloud and scp
The vote at "plugins that are wanted" currently shows "owncloud alternative" being on top. What would that mean, if this plugin was chosen to be? Is the alternative already found?

That thread is just give devs an idea of what plugins are wanted. I don't know of anyone working on it. So, an alternative has not been chosen. Personally, I don't care for plugins that need java.
