Poor SMB performance - Windows to OMV

  • This is my first build with OMV, and I'm really pleased with the ease of setup and features. Great work!

However, I'm having poor SMB performance. There are several threads about this, and I have also read lots about tweaking SMB in various ways. But before venturing into unknown territory I'll post my observations here. Hopefully someone will aid with some tips to troubleshoot it further to find the root cause.

    Build:

Axiomtek CAP800 Embedded PC with Atom D510 CPU and 2GByte RAM. All details here.
OMV is installed without problems on a CF card from CD (ISO openmediavault_1.9_amd64.iso (363.9 MB) image from here)
    Both NICs detected ok (gigabit).
    Harddrive: SSD

I have then created an SMB share on the harddrive and copied a file to the folder from a Windows 7 machine. Transfer rate is only 14-16 MByte/s
The same PC transfers much faster to my QNAP NAS. Here I get 45-48 MByte/s, which is probably the limit of the harddrive in the windows PC (old machine). All devices PC, QNAP and OMV is connected to the same switch/router.

Any tips on finding the bottleneck?

    Thank you.

Are you using the intel NIC on the axiomtek? The realtek NIC could be causing problems.
Did you install the backports 3.16 kernel? There is a button to install it in omv-extras.
