OK Gentleman...thanks for helping me along the way ..... everything seems to be working.

    Question:

So I have reloaded OMV 6 and see all my drives including my Raid drives. I can use Midnight Commander to see the files on the drives.

the files and directories are all on the drives but I tried to make a share with the same name as the one on the drive but when I look in it, it is empty .... can I do anything to use those directories directly in share or do I have to make new ones and copy everything over ?

I was in Telecom for 30 years till WorldCom laid us off and stole half of my retirement. Started as a tech and because a Supervisor, then and Engineer and then an Engineering Manager of their Government Markets. After the layoff I went in to Government Consulting for a company called CACI but it was a lot of traveling and I couldn't do it any more cause my wife got sick so got a job in a datacenter at JP Morgan Chase . Am retired now but still like this stuff.

No too up on it but I can do some stuff in Portainer OK ... basically the only thing is use docker for is to allow me to use Portainer... sounds great .... I have all my YAML files backed up the hard way in text documents so I can cut and past them in. Not so automated as you but at least I can recover. Also Back up my system drive using Backup 6.1 but have never restored the system yet, and you know a backup is only good if it works.

Thanks for the help Bern.... still getting my stuff configured... will swing around to Docker once my other drives are connected.... doing the mundane stuff now like Backup configurations and deciding how I will position all my appdata stuff and once I have this all ready I will get back to docker.... reading my documentation I made on my system before I started this so it wont be hard to re-build... so far so good.

    OK nothing is easy LOL

SO new install is up an running temporarily with just a boot drive and a backup boot drive.... system is doing boot drive backups fine. samba is working fine....

Looking at the directory there is a long file name just like the one during the install

    Port protocol state Service Version

    80 tcp open http nginx

    111 tcp open rcpbind 2-4 (RCP #1000000)

    139 tcp open netbios-ssn Samba smbd 4.6.2

5357 tcp open http BaseHTTPServer 0.6 (Python 3.9.2)

No other ports so 9000 never opened which makes sense because it says something went wrong when it was loaded

Have installed and uninstalled Portainer a few times. Also did a manual install and removal on the console to no avail.

    Any ideas ? :cursing:

OK Gentleman.... thanks for the help, eased my mind considerably. ;) So I am in the process of rebuilding my stuff but I did as you said and installed OMV 6 on a new SSD (1TB) and put a second SSD (1TB) as my boot backup and it is running fine. Also attached my Archive drive back in and I can see the files with no problem at all and have shared it on SMB/CIFS and I can see and read the files from my Windows laptop with no problem. The Next hurdle is to add in the Raid Data Drives and Raid Backup Drives. Hopefully this will go as smoothly.

    OMV Version 6.2.0-2 (Shaitan)

    Kernel Linux 6.0.0-0.deb11.6-amd64

    Processor AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor

    8G RAM

OK so I screwed up! I used clean and it screwed up the rights on my boot drive so I can no longer start SSH or Samba plus a whole lot of other things, like not being able to save changes on my Samba configurations etc. and I considered trying to repair all the rights but I am not great with Linux and it is not working. I decided that maybe a better idea is to just re-install OMV. YIKES! But I have more that 654GB of stuff out there on my OMV. I am the only user so I will not have to rebuild any of that but I do have a bunch of SMB/CIFS shares and shared folders. Is there a way to export them and then re-import them once the new install is done?

md0 is two 240G SSDs I had hanging around raided as a backup for the Boot Drive

md1 is two 4TB WD red drives Raided as my primary Data Drive

md2 is two 4TB WD red drives Raided as my backup Data Drive

sdc1 is a 500G SSD as my system boot drive

sdg1 is a 2 WD RED 2TB Drive not really being used for anything important

sdi1 is a 2 WD RED 2TB Drive not really being used for anything important

sdj1 is an external WD RED 2TB drive that I used as a backup for my data when I panicked after I screwed up my rights

Yeah I know, “Just restore the boot drive from your backup” that was the theory, however I realized that when I reconfigured my OMV and added the second SSD to back up my boot drive, the backup has not been happening since November, and I had since added two more 4TB drive and reconfigured my storage and restored everything from my backup drives etc. blah, blah, blah. So the November is not even close to what I have now. I fixed that problem after the panic but that does not help me now!

So the big question is “Can I reload OMV and still be able to use those raided drive as they are with the data and just bring them into the new system.”

Also as something to help me sleep at night, can I plug in my External 5TB USB drive and back my data to a non-Linux format so I can read the data with a Windows laptop.

This is getting frustrating, spent countless hours trying to figure this one out. I have a 4tb WD40EFRX. I have two of them in my system and one of the drives constantly goes missing.

Took the drive out and did a Drive test where I tested this drive for 2 days and not one bad sector or problem showed up. Thankfully I followed the sage advice here and do have a 40G backup drive in the system s did not lose anything. I have 7 other devices running, some single drive other raid. Only one that seems to go missing is the main drive where I store movies, TV and Music. When the drive is missing nothing can be done to bring it back while the system is up and running. Once the drive is missing, it takes multiple shutdown and restarts to bring it back. That is why I am suspecting a timing problem.

As I said, I thought the drive was bad but tested it for many hours, in another system and it looks good. OK so ruled out a bad drive. Then moved the SATA controller port from a installed card right to the motherboard, thinking maybe the raid port was bad and still going missing.

    Questions:

Is it possible that the drive is not coming up fast enough and the system does not see it there ? is there a way to postpone the check on the drive and see if that stops it going missing?

What actually causes the system to think the drive isn't there? is it possible because I have 8 drives, is it taking too long to get them all? How do I know the drive "check" order and is there a way to change it ? FYI went from SATA 8 to SATA 5 and still doing it :cursing: Can anyone point me in the right direction. I am spinning my wheels now ? Suggestions ?
