Thanks so much Chente, very helpful I guess I'll have to adjust hardware as you said.

Thank you very much for your answer Chente. I am sure it is the best suggestion, but I would see that as a last resource to be honest. I saw some posts where users managed to solve it (at least I think they did^ For example here SMART support for SSD · Issue #1619 · openmediavault/openmediavault (github.com)), I just don't understand how they did and how I can replicate...
Alternatively, is SMART needed or strongly recommended? Everything else including plex server works great...

Hello,
I might not provide all the information needed because I just don<t know what would be relevant, so tell me what other information would be relevant
I am setting up a new OMV7 (7.1.1-1 (Sandworm)) on pi5 8b (Processor Raspberry Pi 5 Model B Rev 1.0; Kernel Linux 6.6.28+rpt-rpi-2712), using a usb hard drive (Seagate One Touch model number STKZ4000404) connected via a powered USB. The issue remains when the drive is connected directly to the raspi. All updates have been installed. I had no issue detecting the drive, but when creating SMART test scheduled tasks and trying to run them, I get the following error:
smartctl 7.3 2022-02-28 r5338 [aarch64-linux-6.6.28+rpt-rpi-2712] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-22, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, http://www.smartmontools.org
Read Device Identity failed: scsi error unsupported field in scsi command
If this is a USB connected device, look at the various --device=TYPE variants
A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.
I searched on google and found multiple posts referring to updating database and the like, but I have no idea how to use the information I read, so I would welcome anyone's advice on how to troubleshoot my issue.
Thanks!

So I started back from scratch again today, and whether it was a connection error or a full temp file, it worked like a charm!!! Thank you so much all for your help

Well, no luck, and I don't understand! Used SD formatter, then H2testw which came out with no errors, then SD formatter again. Installed OS Lite 64bit with preset user name/password, no WIFI setting
OS installation went well, updates went well, reboot great. Then I typed the command to install OMV, and here is what I got... Any suggestions at this point? I really don't know what I might have done wrong. Tried to reboot and redo the OMV installation, with the same result...

It's the same splash before (or after, ) booting the eeprom.
It's better that you flash another SDcard (a high quality 32Gb is more than enough for the OS) with the RaspiOS and follow the instructions on the wiki and don't skip this step to make sure your SDcard is in good condition.
omv7:raspberry_pi_install [omv-extras.org]
From the looks of it, that one is toasted.
Or just run the same test above on the old card and see how it goes.
Which SDcard are you using? brand, size, etc
It's a scandisk 16GB, but not new (I've used it in cameras and phones). I'll try a brand new card. I also didn't know about the testing steps so never did though, could have been my deadly mistake! Thanks so much, I'll follow those steps with a new card, fingers crossed!

Are you installing OMV following the steps in this guide? https://wiki.omv-extras.org/do…omv7:raspberry_pi_install
Or maybe some other procedure found on the internet?
I was not that procedure, although similar, but missing what seems to be essential steps, including SD card testing as well as the GitHub preinstall line (it was going straight from the reboot to the github install line. I am definitely trying this tonight!

This only appeared after in installed OMV though. I started with os lite 64bit loaded on my SD card, all booted great, did updates, all good, installed OMV from the wget command above, rebooted, but the system never booted past the rainbow screen I showed you. So it has to be somewhere related to the installation of OMV, no? What else could it be if it was running until then?

I've attached a picture

Thank you so much Chente. I don't see an error on my Pi but I am happy to try anything to get the system to at least boot. I might be blind, but the link explains how to access folders/files through the GUI. Do you have an advice on how to configure the folder in the plugin, when the system doesn't boot? All I see is a screen with multicolor square (what I called the rainbow screen). Thanks so much!

I'm actually trying to paste the body email as plain text, but the forum changes the text to code.
So the "code" in my post saying "1. Throw error if compose file has change_to_compose etc etc" is actually what the email with the update notification is saying. To be clear, my Pi is "dead", just showing the rainbow screen, not booting to anything and not giving any error of any kind.
Would it be helpful to show the list of the updates that the system did before it fully crashed? I can try and post the email body as a picture instead of copying/pasting the text

I had OMV installed on raspberry 4b running plex, setup 3 days ago, working great. I then received the notifications below for updates, where your email address is, so I was hoping you could assist. Once I did the update and applied the changes in OMV (confirmed this was successful), I rebooted my Pi, which from there got stuck to the rainbow screen, no internet to connect to it via ssh.
I thankfully have no data saved on my SD card, so I started again from scratch, installing OS lite 64bit successfully, running updates no problem, followed by installing OMV running the command sudo wget -O - https://github.com/OpenMediaVa…Script/raw/master/install | sudo bash, then rebooted the system.
OMV installation ran successfully (from what I can see, all green OK with no error messages that I noticed), but upon reboot, same thing, the Pi is stuck on the rainbow screen again.
Are the updates below applied to the “core” OMV master installation link from Github, making it that OMV is not running for the same reason the updates crashed my system to start? Or would you know if this is a separate problem?
I am very new to the Pi platform and really just follow instructions I find on the Raspberry Pi or OMV forums, so any level of guidance would be very appreciated!
I also just tried to copy and paste the email body that notified me that updates were available and contained the list of those updates, but it's showing strangely below... I don't know how to paste it differently...Trying differently: see attached document where the email containing the list of updates done to my system, that caused it to crash
