You will need a GPU to install the operating system. From that moment on you could remove the GPU from the system but for that the motherboard must allow startup without GPU, not all motherboards allow it.

Also keep in mind that if you ever need to log in locally you will have to reinstall the GPU at least temporarily.

i see, so at least i need some GPU to run it and boot for the first time.

and i guess my motherboard won't allow it without GPU.

is there any recommendation for lowest TDP GPU to install on my NAS? since the Ryzen 1600 already consume around 65W

Hi, i'm new in here and really curious about this kind of setup.

I’m planning to build a Network Attached Storage (NAS) using my old PC. Here are the specifications:

    • CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 (which doesn’t have an integrated GPU)
    • RAM: 8 GB (around 3200Mhz)
    • Motherboard: MSI ProVDH B350M (M-Atx Motherboard)
    • Storage:
      • Old Hard Drive (for data storage)
      • NVMe SSD (for cache)
      • SATA SSD (for the operating system)

I intend to use OpenMediaVault as the operating system.
My question is: Can I build this NAS without a dedicated GPU?

Since the Ryzen 5 1600 lacks integrated graphics, will it still function properly for NAS purposes?

Thanks in advance for your insights!
