First Time Build NAS

  • What I want is media storage, I have raspberry pi Kodi boxes all over my house that have replaced cable in my house. Currently I use my main computer as storage and run the mysql server to sync kodi devices. Obviously this can be problematic when I want to restart the computer or an update breaks things (I use arch linux so it can happen). Also I currently don't use a backup solution, so I am tempting fate right now. On top of that my current 2tb hd is nearly full so I need more storage soon. So I search for a solution, find out about NAS's which sound like everything I could want. DIY option is my normal route, so I start looking at OS's. I heard a ton about freeNAS, which looks like a great OS, but I already have experience working in linux and would prefer to have less of a learning curve as possible.

So I found OMV and looks like it might be what I want. I want media storage, mysql server (if it is debain based I don't see this being an issue), and I want a backup solution of some sort because it would really suck to lose all my media. It sounds like I actually don't want raid. I just want my files reliably backed up every week or so. Another feature that might be nice would be to have the ability to remotely stream movies from my phone or laptop if I am out of state, but this not a requirement.

Now the hardware wise I have no idea where to start. Obviously I don't want to spend any more money than I have to, but I also want a system that does what I need reliably. I didn't find a recommended hardware guide on this forum, but I did find a recommended hardware guide on the freenas forum. It seems to focus on ecc memory and after looking up prices, that price seems to climb pretty high, at least imo.

I did find the recommended Node 304 case looks nice for the price of $61 and has 6hd bays. I See WD Reds recommended a ton, so I have no problem jumping on that bandwagon. 6TB drives are either $240 for these or $280 for these which i don't see the difference between them. But I could buy 2, use one as a backup, and still have 4 bays of expansion with that case. As far as the rest of the system, I really have zero idea where to start. Any recommendations?

  • Well I browsed the forum and it seems like quite a few setups had problem getting omv to run out of the box, so I looked for one that didn't have issues. So here's what I got for a list so far:

PSU: $109.99 be quiet! STRAIGHT POWER 10 600W
    CPU: $49.99 Intel G3258 3.2 GHz LGA1150
    Motherboard: $117 GIGABYTE GA-H97N-WIFI LGA 1150
    Ram: $34.99 Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Case: $61.43 Fractal Design Node 304 Mini ITX HybridMedia
    Storage: $479.98 2x WD Red 6TB IntelliPower
OS Storage: $36.99 OCZ Storage Solutions Trion 100 Series 120GB
    Total: $890.37
    With Tax: $943.79

I have a microcenter a couple miles away so I can get the in store stuff there.

    any input?

OMV has a MySQL plugin. I use rsync and it can be scheduled to make a backup on the server or even to another server.

FreeNAS recommends ECC when using ZFS. You don't need it otherwise. WD Reds are good drives. Unless you are transcoding, a low end dual processor will more than good enough.

  • I took recommendations from many places and ended up with this:

    Case: Node 804
PSU: be quiet! STRAIGHT POWER 10 600W
CPU: AMD Dual-Core A4-Series APU for Desktops A4-4000
    Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-F2A88XM-HD3
    Ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB
Media Storage: 2x 6TB WD Red
OS Storage: OCZ Trion 100 120gb

Now I just need to figure out how to make this OMV work lol. It just booted and I can login as root, so things are looking good so far, back to the setup page
