Adding Hard Drives

  • Hello.

I'm building my first NAS Server and don't really know my way around them yet so I have a few questions. With OMV is there a minimum requirement for the number of drives required to start the build? Right now I have one WD RED 2TB drive. Do I need 2 or three to start?

This brings me to my next question, when I do add drives, can I just slide them in an add them to an array, and when I do will I loose the data on the one existing drive already in place? Or do they need to be added to their own array every time I add a new drive or two? I wont be picking up another drive for a few months (I plan on adding 2 more 2TB drives some time in April or May).

    Regards,

  • You only need 2 to start. The system drive does not need to be big and many people use small laptop hard drives for that. There is no array unless you do a RAID configuration. When you install you only want the system drive connected. Then after installation you can plugin your 2TB WD. I'd recommend formatting it ext4.

By two drives I'm assuming you mean one drive for the OS (OMV) and the 2nd for storage?

As for the OMV drive.. keep in mind.. this drive does not have to be very large at all. If it wasn't for the amount of disk writing that OMV does, you could use a USB or CIF card. Some folks use SSD's with success.. but due to the fact that some of them can be finnicky with Linux, not to mention the issues w/ the amount of disk writing OMV does... I just don't think it's a viable solution for me at this time.

If you don't have access to a broken laptop or netbook to get a 2.5in drive from, you might try checking ebay or maybe Amazon. You can find new 2.5in SATA drives in the 40-160gig range for $30-$50 pretty easy. The key thing is... you don't need a "massive" drive for the OS drive... as it has a fairly small footprint
