The debian technical committee has voted systemd to be the default init system for Debian 8. Now Ubuntu is all alone with upstart. Yeah....

The vote is in Systemd Wins.

They made good move. I like systemd.
-
I like that decision too! It makes the decision on switching to LMDE easier!
-
May someone enlighten me which is which?
systemd == service name restart?
Greetings

Same here. I am running debian on all my servers except my asterisk phone system which is running pbxinaflash. On the desktop I'm running Linux Mint 16 however, since it's based on Ubuntu I'm not a fan. So next I will try running debian with the cinnamon gui DE which is my new favorite desktop environment by far. I hear it works very well. Now Ubuntu is all alone with upstart....
I believe systemd is the future init system. -
SystemD is the new init start system that will replave SystemV that currently Debian uses.
Here is a video on it https://archive.fosdem.org/201…ule/event/debian_systemd/ -
I'm mostly looking forward to the simple service files (Couchpotato example):
-
Yep that's why I prefer systemd over upstart. http://patrakov.blogspot.ca/20…ystemd-service-files.html
It's simple compared to systeminitV -
Well, luckily its already in Wheezy. So we don't have to wait so long for it

Nope, also bootup time is fast I mean really fast. Systemd is built into the kernel itself only problem is that it only works with Linux so the BSD people are not happy. Also, its backed by RedHat so Ubuntu does not like that either.
-
Here is a cheat sheet to compare the difference. Its from the fedora site. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SysVinit_to_Systemd_Cheatsheet
Just because its new it does not mean it's bad. -
It's been in fedora quite a while. I wish more things in linux would be unified. It would be nice if apt was different. Like just apt install xxxx. Why get and cache? Get more like yum.

Here is a YouTube video that gives an explanation on the init systems. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTFLEXYY6jY

I agree but I'm really happy that Debian chose systemd over upstart. At least init scripts will be easy to use/write compared to upstart. I don't like upstart. My only wish would be that Linux Mint would use Debian instead of Ubuntu. There is no need for a new desktop every 6 months. Every 2 years or so is good enough. This way they can spend more time perfecting the DE instead.

I was not in this that much before i looked that video. Very interesting.
For me, systemd looks best. Are there any big disadvantages?
-
As for the advantages you got mostly simplicity and speed are the major factors. In fact, they have it booting in embedded Linux and boot time is under 1 second. Average boot time is about 6 seconds on an average PC. The only major disadvantage is that it is Linux only. So BSD people are not happy the reason is because systemd is a Linux kernel specific feature.
-
Thats fast^^
Soo.... I´m no BSD user, systemd is ok for me
-
For 99% of users out there systemd is great its just the 1% that are not happy.
Here is a video of openrc which is suppose to be faster than systemV vs systemd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NXMmHYNYfA -
Hell, thats fast.

Thats what i said - even before i watched the video david... you´re slow!
