MySQL on USB stick?

  • I have a somewhat weird question here. I noticed that owncloud isn't always as fast as I'd like it to be, not sure why because CPU loads are not exceptionally high so I figured disk speed might have something to do with it? Now I don't have exceptionally fast disks and are planning to make them even slower because I'm going to put them in RAID 1. I think speeds will still be acceptable in sequential read mode but as owncloud needs both the data files and the Mysql data the disk heads will have to move up and down. To reduce these movements I thought it could be an idea to place Mysql database on a USB stick.

I am aware that USB sticks do not have wear levelling like hard drives do, so I understand nobody would recommend this on the record. I was hoping someone could give me an idea of how great the risk is. I have only 2 users on owncloud and am planning to setup KODI to use mysql but that should not make excessive use of mysql. I have 2 identical USB drives so could put them in RAID 1 as well. I guess the question is how long can I expect them to last? And would it make a performance difference at all if I do this?

MySQL puts quite a bit of common data in memory. So, for two users, running from a rotating hard disk shouldn't be much slower. I definitely would not use usb sticks even in raid 1.
