My hardware is ready...

  • Hi,

Fiew months ago I posted a topic to get some info about OpenMediaVault (see here : OpenMediaVault NAS / General questions)

Here I come few months latter with my hardware ready to be used (Node 304, Asus h110i-plus, i3 6300, 12TB WD, 8gb of Ram, 60GB SSD).

So the purpose of this NAS is mainly for storage, streaming, and web server.

I'd like to use ZFS and I wan't the hard drive to be encrypted.

I'm familiar with some basic Linux commands.

So I have 3 questions before I start anything :

    - When using ZFS should I use any RAID?
    - What OpenMediaVault to install (2.0 or 3.0)?
    - Which version of Debian should I install?

    Thank you very much!

  • currently no native encryption for zfs
that feature will be included next zfs release

    1. no you dont need use raid although it is recommended.. (parity hdd for failure)
    use omv-zfs plugin
    2. omv 3
    3. use omv install cd

    OMV3 on Proxmox
    Intel E3-1245 v5 | 32GB ECC RAM | 4x3TB RAID10 HDD
    omv-zfs | omv-nginx | omv-letsencrypt | omv-openvpn
    Click link for more details

  • Thank you luxflow for your answer.

I see in your signature that you encrypt your hard drives and you use at the same time zfs.

So if I understand well these are the steps I should follow :

install omv via install CD > install omv-zfs > install omv-letsencrypt > do RAID

    Am I correct?

letsencrypt is for signing ssl certs.

The luks plugin is for encrypting storage.

The order of the plugin installation doesn't matter but the order of the configuration does. While there are different ways to set this up, I would create the encrypted device(s) with luks first and then zfs on top of that. I haven't tried that to see if it works though.

You are using the latest OMV 3.0.58 iso? The SSD is plugged into a sata port? Is ahci enabled?

  • So I guessed (and made some researches) and I find out that the ahci should be enabled in the BIOS, but I don't have those parameters. Here are the screenshots of the parameters of the SATA ports in the BIOS and how I set them, and the message I keep getting while installing :

No but you could try the Debian Jessie netinstall iso.

That probably won't work. OMV re-formats it every time you install. Maybe the drive needs to be wipe? You can also install OMV on the drive in a different system temporarily. Then move the drive to the correct system and run omv-firstaid to fix the networking.

I don't understand what you mean by "Install OMV on the drive in a different system temporarily"? You're talking about filesystem? Other than ext4?

I think I'll try to install windows on it and see how it'll go.

Also how come is the SSD drive seen as a SCSI5 drive? (see red screenshot above)

Nope. Put the drive in a completely different system - desktop, laptop, whatever - and disconnect all other drives. Install OMV just like you were going to on your new hardware. After installing, take the drive out and put it in the new hardware. It should work.

    Noooooooooooo :D

No idea. That might be why you are having problems installing.

    Ha ha! Don't worry it's temporary :D

Unfortunately I don't have any other system to put the drive on...the one I'm using right know is a Surface Pro 2 :-/

  • Ok now I know that it's not a problem coming from the SSD drive : I unpluged the SSD drive and tried to install Windows on one of the 4TB hard drives but Windows didn't see any hard drive pluged in.

So the the SATA drives are not being seen.

I think I may have a faulty motherboard

  • Ok problem solved. (BIOS upgrade + some cabling :-D)

    OMV installed on SSD.

Next step install luks plugin, followed by zfs plugin

after luks plugin installation, I wanted to mount the hard drives, here is what I get :

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
