OMV like guest virtual machine

  • Hello,

    As I plan to buy a new computer, I have a few questions. I want to use openmediavault (essential ;) ), but I would have other uses on my machine (router, xbmc + video games, email, owncloud).
    On my previous server, I could use appliances like my email server and owncloud through virtualbox plugin in openmediavault.
    In my new setup, I'd rather use a host system as ubuntu and use openmediavault like a guest. But I wonder about the reliability of the solution. This configuration does it affect performance? Mounting a RAID through openmediavault is it possible?
    f using openmediavault as guest is possible, what is the best system? Virtualbox? I heard of KVM / QEMU, Proxmox, but these solutions scare me a bit (I'm not at all computer).

    Thank you for your answers and welcomes you for your ambitious work.

    Florent

    Proxmox works great as well. Everything is done through the web interface so it is pretty easy.

    omv 7.1.0-2 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.8 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.13 | compose 7.2 | k8s 7.1.0-3 | cputemp 7.0.1 | mergerfs 7.0.5 | scripts 7.0.7

  • OK, so no worries for omv in virtualization with a RAID soft. However, I imagine that the performance is slightly lower?

    It may not be the issue here, but if I use proxmox (for exemple), I guess I'll tear my hair of newbie (french expression) to run a ubuntu guest with running a TV tuner card or lever usb game ... etc ... Maybe I should use virtualbox, even if the level of performance it will be less interesting?

    PS: ryecoaaron, do not you have the gift of ubiquity? :)

    On my system running Proxmox and OMV as a guest using virtio network and drive, I can still saturate the gigabit network adapter. The same system with virtualbox hits 50MB/s. Still not bad.

    If you want to use a tv tuner card, I probably would stay away proxmox. I haven't converted my email server over from Virtualbox because it runs so well. So, virtualbox is not a bad idea.

    gift of ubiquity... I wish :)
