Proxmox/OVM/Ubooquity memory issue

  • Hello everyone,

I just recently got into the homelab hobby and Linux world in general. I have whats probably not an uncommon setup: Proxmox installed bare metal on old PC hardware, with Open Media Vault 5 installed as a VM with Docker and Portainer add-ins. I've spun up a few Docker containers like Calibre, and Nginx Reverse Proxy and they have generally worked well. I'm having an issue with Ubooquity that I'm hoping someone can help with. There are so many different moving parts in the setup, I'm not sure where to go for help other than places like here and reddit.

My server has 24GB of physical RAM and the OMV5 VM has 16GB of that allotted for it. When I spin up Ubooquity it seems to max out the memory of the VM, using 12-14GB of memory. This seems like a lot for a lite weight Docker container. The problem is, depending on where I look, the memory consumption is displayed differently, by alot. I've attached images of four of the places I'm looking at the Ubooquity memory usage: Proxmox, OMV5, NetData container, and Glances container. Proxmox and Glances show the OMV5 VM (where Docker and Ubooquity are running) and Ubooquity container itself using 12-13GB of memory respectively. However, when looking at OMV5 dashboard and NetData, they only show approximately 2GB of memory being used.

So, I guess my question is which system is showing Ubooquity's actual memory usage? And if its Proxmox or Glances, why in the world is the container using that much memory, even when its sitting idle? If this is just what Ubooquity needs, is there other lite weight self-hosted alternatives out there? I curate my comic collection with ComicRack, so Ubooquity is mainly serving as a OPDS server to my comic reader apps like Chunky and Marvin 3.

  • Proxmox is purpose built to run virtual machines. Why would you not run vm's on it instead of OMV? Anyway try your problem on a new vm and see if it works.

Not quite sure I understand the question. OMV is running as a VM on Proxmox. I wouldn't think OMV as an OS is any different than Ubuntu or Mint, correct?

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the response dohn. I'm not sure we are on the same page (or more likely I'm not understanding you very well).

I have Proxmox installed and have a virtual machine of OMV5 installed (VM 101 in the first picture). Inside OMV VM, I have Docker and Portainer installed. Similar to the setup TechnoDadLife has shown in his YouTube videos. I have a Ubooquity container running there. So, where are you suggesting I run the Ubooquity container if not in OMV5's VM?

Again, thanks for the time and sorry if I'm just dense :)
