Thank you chris_kmn for this amazing guides. I have been following the OMV6 guide for Nvidia, but I face issue on Step 3 as it says
"Conflicting nouveau kernel module loaded" and something like easiest way to fix this is reboot.
Still I continue and complete the step 3 entirely, and reach the point where I reboot and checked with nvidia-smi after reboot.
But here I get error stating "NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running." -
Which kernel are u running and which version of omv ?

Which kernel are u running and which version of omv ?
Complete noob here, first time using terminal.
So no idea on kernel.
But the OMV is V6.0.24 and its a clean install on my old Laptop running i7 3rd Gen and NVidia 840M
-
Well, then I think your hardware is not supported and even if it would be, your old nvidia chip would not improve transcoding performance
-
-
Oh. I see. However, for your reference here is the screenshot of exact message i get after 90% installation of Nvidia drivers and after pressing ok it proceeds normally :
-
Thanks a lot for the inputs and quick replies.
I thought that Conficting Kernal message was normal as I checked it was also mentioned here : https://linuxhint.com/install-nvidia-drivers-debian-11/
And there it made it sound normal
-
I just checked debian page and your nvidia chip should be supported, but still a very low performance chip.
You need to work on installing OMV extras and there to activate the latest backport or pve kernel.
So start getting comfortable with the cli 😉
-
Yes you are right, the message should be normal. During driver installation the nouveau driver should be deactivated. That‘s why one should reboot after installation.
Installing kernels could be done under the omv-extras page (see picture). Reboot needed afterwards.

You can do it after xconfig.
And yes, it should also work with jellyfin as long as you are using the nvidia runtime in docker
-
great. So shall I start with installing the kernel first or Nvidia drivers? Sorry about so many questions as I'm just starting out with Linux.
And shall I be installing PVE kernel as while clean installation of OMV6 I can see something like amd64.
-
Start with the kernel first. The 5.19 pve (proxmox) kernel works as well as the 5.18 bpo (backports) kernel.
-
oh i checked my kernel is showing up as 5.16 bpo 4 amd64, is that the hardware not supported? And im not using promox its a baremetal install of omv6
As installing Proxmox 5.19 is giving me errors
-
Ok, 5.16 bpo is also fine
-
hey I tried, installing OMV extras and kernels from plugins _ and rebooted
And from Update management, i updated everything and kernel was updated to 5.18 bpo from here, i again rebooted after everything was updated.
Followed everything in Nvidia driver installation and after step 3 rebooted but Nvidia Smi still says same things : couldn't communicate with Nvidia Drivers.
-
Were there any error messages during driver installation (cli)?
You need to check the output when you execute
apt install -t bullseye-backports nvidia-driver firmware-misc-nonfreeAnd check if there are any error messages when you execute
dmesg
in the cli
-
And you could also check the output of
nvidia-detect
If it is not installed:
apt install nvidia-detect
It tells you which driver to install
