Hardfreeze on Loading kernel

  • Hi there

I got an issue after the last update. Maybe there was a short error message I didn't notice, when the update did install the latest proxmox kernel. Now my system gets stuck when trying to load the kernel after a reboot. I was able to install some other kernels via live system and chroot, but I can`t run the update-grub command.

Does someone know how to mount the boot partition into a live system to repair grub?

    Best regards

Boot the debian netinst iso from a usb stick and choose the repair option

  • I tried the Boot Repair Disk and chose the recommended repair.

Now I can just boot into GRUB, ls returns (hd0) and (hd1), both with unknown filesystem...

I guess I have to perform a fresh install.

It startet with the same error mentioned here: Unable to install Proxmox kernels

But my fault was to perform a restart.

  • Just to give a short update: something seems to be broken with the latest proxmox kernels. Even after setting up a new machine and installing the Kernel-Plugin zo get the latest proxmox kernel 6.14 it gives the following error after reboot:

The 6.14 kernel is currently proxmox's testing kernel. If it doesn't work, you should use the 6.11 kernel.

So the kernel repo from OMV-Extras does use the testing proxmox kernel?

I thought it would use stable versions

The kernel plugin allows you to install the 6.2, 6.5, 6.8, 6.11, 6.14 kernels. Currently the 6.14 kernel is the proxmox testing kernel. There is no stable 6.14 proxmox kernel currently. All of the other kernels are stable proxmox kernels.

  • Yeah, but how can I determine from the Plugin which is the stable version? Can I opt-out for testing kernels?

Otherwise an fast apt-get update && apt-get upgrade will cause problems as mentioned before.

how can I determine from the Plugin which is the stable version?

I don't mark them because then I have to release a new version of the plugin every time there is a change. 6.14 will likely be the test kernel for a few more months.

Can I opt-out for testing kernels?

Yep. Don't click the 6.14 button. You determine which kernel is installed.

Otherwise an fast apt-get update && apt-get upgrade will cause problems as mentioned before.

This is potentially a problem with any update. If your system is that critical, you should have a test system to install updates on and backups of the main system. If you install the proxmox 6.11 kernel, it won't install the 6.14 kernel as an update if that is what you were thinking.
