After latest update: Mounting / unmounting USB Harddrive causes error message

  • OK, before I do something stupid, I'll try anything else hahahaha.

    I don't know why, but now the

    Code
    blkid

    command gives me actually a results.

    Before I received this:

    Code
    root@pdb-matrix:~# blkid
    -bash: $'\342\200\213blkid': command not found
    root@pdb-matrix:~# sudo blkid
    sudo: blkid: command not found
    root@pdb-matrix:~# blkid
    -bash: $'\342\200\213blkid': command not found

    Can't see what is different, but after coming back to the computer after a while, when I use blkid now, this is the results (?!?):

    Code
    root@pdb-matrix:~# blkid

    Luckily this USB disk is one of my 2 external backup discs. They are used in turns to make backups of my data on a weekly basis on Friday (so they are getting connected every 2nd week). Further I have an internal backup disk which I syncronize with the raid usually on Wednesday. So if I have to set it up again, it won't kill me.

    However, i wouldn't want to make any experiments before I don't have the lastest data backup on the other USB disk.

    • Offizieller Beitrag

    Don't experiment if I give you the command you can end up writing to system drive or others and cause major problems.
    In this case just make sure you have your backup done. Take the usb hard drive to windows and format it there. That hopefully should give you a new UUID in the ntfs drive. Plug it back again and see if it works properly.

  • OK, for now I won't do anything then, because the other backup disk is not on site (only on Fridays one of the disks is in the office to do the backup).

    I guess I'll have to come to the office tomorrow and bring the other backup disk to backup the files from this week to that disk again. Hopefully I can mount this disk, because it is basically the same disk model (Seagate Portable External HDD, 2,5").

    So formatting will give me a new UUID? Will do some research on this.

    I left it as NTFS, because in this case I could access it with a Windows computer without any problems, in case the server goes down and I need access to the backup. I could have formated in Ext3 or Ext4 as well, if that is a better option. But it would make access from another computer a lot more difficult.

  • I can imagine. This is always a risky thing. Sometimes, when I setup ubuntu new I am quite worried to set the wrong partition and suddenly my windows partition is gone...hehehehe.

    Thank you very much so far. I will see if I manage to come to the office tomorrow or if I do it on monday. I think I was able to backup the files this morning, so I am fine and I have checked and I can access the USB Disk from my windows computer without a problem. So I am fine with the backup.

    Have a nice weekend!

  • Hi everyone!

    Hope you had a good weekend. I am glad that I didn't go to the office on Saturday (you will see why further below).

    OK, so I have both backup disks with me today and they are both connected and show in the file system section:

    However, this is worse than expected! No I can't mount any of the two, which can be a big problem because I would have to reset both of the backup disks, which is quite a bit of a risk. I have an internal backup disk, but...

    Here the error messages for Disk "1" (the one that was not on site on Friday):

    Code
    Failed to mount '/dev/disk/by-uuid/0294023894022EAB': mount: no such partition found
    Error #6000:
    exception 'OMVException' with message 'Failed to mount '/dev/disk/by-uuid/0294023894022EAB': mount: no such partition found' in /usr/share/openmediavault/engined/rpc/filesystemmgmt.inc:887

    #3 /usr/sbin/omv-engined(500): OMVRpc::exec('FileSystemMgmt', 'mount', Array, Array, 1)
    #4 {main}

    For disk 2 (the one I had trouble with on Friday):

    Isn't a USB disk supposed to be mounted temporarily anyway? Why doesn't it simply recognise the disks as a new disk? The UUID shouldn't be saves anyway, because it is not a fixed mount, right?

    Any help appreciated.

  • Good question. Maybe I made a mistake with copying the error message. I will check that again.

    By the way: I did not format any of the disks yet, because I wanted to check if the second backup disk works fine with the installation.

  • This is weird: I have checked and the error messages show the same UUID for both disks (they are the same type of disk, but they still should have different UUIDs, right?).

    Maybe because I have them on a the same time. I will try one by one.

  • Pressing the delete button doesn't show any difference.

    I connected the disks seperatly, but the error message always goes for the UUID 0294023894022EAB

    It most be stored somewhere and is not being "released". Because I am quite sure that the disks don't have the same UUID. They are not clones...

    What is it about this file?

    Code
    /usr/share/openmediavault/engined/rpc/filesystemmgmt.inc

    Could the problem lie there?

  • One other thing: I connected both USB drives. They both show up, one as /dev/sde1 and the other one as /dev/sdf1.

    However, when I go for

    Code
    $ ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/

    this comes up and I can only find one of the two USB drives:

    Code
    root@pdb-matrix:~# ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/
    total 0
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Nov 24 13:41 0294023894022EAB -> ../../sdf1

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 Nov 24 12:36 4107a386-6776-479f-823e-d38dba9bc5b9 -> ../../md127
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Nov 24 12:36 45d5cabe-bea7-4056-8386-4003fe129933 -> ../../sda1
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Nov 24 12:36 f681cb50-2239-4b87-9006-a639de982087 -> ../../sdd1

    It is missing the sde1. How come that OVM is showing the sde1 and Linux not? Is this maybe stored somewhere else? Or am I using the wrong commands (I am researching this on the internet and learning step by step).
