    That could only happen if someone creates a shared folder in the mount folder of a hard drive. But you could be right, sometimes I forget that users can do things, so to speak, out of the ordinary. The OP will have to respond to that.

    I didn't say that.

    But if he was trying to bulk change all the permissions on all the files in a directory such as a drive's root that had quota files in it, some type of error is going to be reported because even root can not do that to those files…

    The aquota.* files have that bit set and since the server admin didn't set them he could easily be completely unaware of this property.

    Only root could set that bit. I assume the server administrator would know if he had done it. I think there has to be another reason.
