That could only happen if someone creates a shared folder in the mount folder of a hard drive. But you could be right, sometimes I forget that users can do things, so to speak, out of the ordinary. The OP will have to respond to that. -

You might be interested in googling the pros and cons of continuously stopping/booting a hard drive on a server. And you may also be interested in comparing the cost of consuming a working hard drive versus the cost of replacing a broken hard drive.

I didn't say that.
But if he was trying to bulk change all the permissions on all the files in a directory such as a drive's root that had quota files in it, some type of error is going to be reported because even root can not do that to those files… -

The aquota.* files have that bit set and since the server admin didn't set them he could easily be completely unaware of this property.
