openvpn and file server

  • Hello All!

I am studying how to install openvpn in openmediavault.
    My doubt:

One user change job sector out of our network. He need to access your files on OMV. Can be possible have access through of openvpn and the user use openvpn client and access yours files?

    Thanks you attention and Help

  • Hello,

If I undestand good, you ask if user connected with OpenVPN will have access to files - like share drives - then yes.
I didn't use client on Linux systems, only Widnows and using OpenVPN in my home. From Windows side I can tell that if you configure your VPN right way you can have same accesses as in local network.
    Confirmed by me :D

    Debian 8.6 Jessie + OMV 3.0.latest Kernel: Linux 4.8.0-0.bpo.2-amd64
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400@3GHz
    Memory: 4GB RAM
    OS-HDD: Samsung SSD 120 GB +LVM

Full media and download center configured.

BIG and special thanks for OMV-Extras team for great plug-ins (especially: TeamSpeak, VirtualBox, Sonarr, Radarr, and rest I use :))

kawu2 is correct. The whole idea of openvpn is to connect to a remote network like you are connected locally.

    omv 7.0.5-1 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.8 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.13 | compose 7.1.6 | k8s 7.1.0-3 | cputemp 7.0.1 | mergerfs 7.0.4

omv-extras.org plugins source code and issue tracker - github - changelogs

Please try ctrl-shift-R and read this before posting a question.

Please put your OMV system details in your signature.
Please don't PM for support... Too many PMs!

  • Hey Douglas,

Yes - when user connect via OpenVPN and want to access any local resources he need to use/have credentials to those resources.

    So for example lets say:
    Local OMV SMB on 192.168.0.100
User created on OMV with access to PUBLIC share (f.e. username test, passwd test)
What user need to do from external network?:
    1. Connect via OpenVPN
    2. go to (or have mapped) \\192.168.0.100\public
    3. put his credentials from OMV (if not remembered by system #from example: username test passwd test)
    4. all done - access available

This situation is same for other things like RDP access and so on.
