Hi,
I'd like some advice on ZFS and RAID for my HP N54L.
I currently have 2 x 4TB Drives in my HP N54L formatted as ext4, that are backed up offline manually to 2 more 4TB Drives when the content significantly changes. I am looking into the posibility of adding the 2 offline drives to the N54L and setting up a ZFS RAID.
I don't really know too much about ZFS or RAID so I was hoping someone could set me straight.
I have read that the RAID in the N54L is a bit of a fake raid, so I would need a separate RAID card?
What is the difference between a ZFS software RAID and hardware RAID?
I know OMV doesn't officially support ZFS at the moment, but lets just assume that for the purpose of this, that it does - could I add the 2 additional 4TB drives to the N54L and setup a ZFS RAID giving me 8TB of fair performing ZFS storage? Or am I missing some vital hardware components or additional drives etc?
Thanks
EDIT: Just been doing some more research on this and I think I may have (in part) answered one of my own questions. Seems as though a hardware RAID card is detrimental to a ZFS filesystem, so RAIDz is actually a software RAID. On that reconing, I guess I have everything I need to setup RAIDz on my N54L. Is this correct?
