Can't check for updates. Error messages in 3.0.59. Not a DNS issue

  • Hi there,

I could not check for updates without receiving an error message before upgrading to 3.059 from 58. However, I decided to update to the latest build as it was an option (just in case this resolved my issues). Unfortunately, I still can't check for updates without receiving an error message:

Does anyone have any suggestions to resolve this issue please?

    Thanks

  • Hi there

I recall installing winrar or perhaps an alternative to midnight commander. I'm not exactly sure when/how I installed the volatile repo. It seems to be more trouble than it is worth.

What do I need to do to uninstall it? Help is appreciated!

    Thanks

Well clearly is causing issues with your apt update, the repo is no longer hosted in that URL. Also you're in debian jessie, the web page clearly states there that volatile was intended for versions earlier than Squeeze, that was 4 YEARS ago.

I believe you there, but you probably read a guide and did not look at the date or distribution.

  • Yeah, I have to agree with you there on those points.. Granted, I'm new to linux in general and have been a little 'too' eager to get things up and running..

Any thoughts on how I may remove the 'very' dated repo?

  • ok I'll check that now..

  • I have the following in the /etc/apt/sources.list file

Do I delete lines 7 to 15? Or the entire contents?

I also have some references in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/lenny.non-free.list

    Code
    deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny non-free
    deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates non-free
    deb http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile non-free

I'm inclined to delete the lenny.non-free.list file

  • Brilliant! Thank you for the feedback.
