How to copy Bootdisk to a new HD ?

  • HI.

I've installed OMV on my HP Data Vault x510 just to see if it runs better than Windows Homeserver.
So I installed it on an USB-Stick for testing.
Now it runs so smooth with all the functions i want to have that I want to keep it an transfer the Bootdisk (USB-Stick) to a an USB-Harddisk.
I want to keep all my settings an installs, so i don't want to to do a new install.

Can someone please explain how to do this ?
I have not much experience with Linux.

    Thx

Clonezilla works great. Plug both in and do a device to device clone.

  • Yes, I did. During that part of the process I get a grub failed message on the screen.

I am cloning on a 32 bit machine while the disk I am cloning is from a 64 bit machine. I hope that is not an issue.

    The error is:

error: hd1 appears to contain a ufs2 file system which isn't know to reserve space for DOS-style boot. Installing GRUB there could result in FILESYSTEM DESTRUCTION if valuable data is overwritten by grub-setup (--skip-fs-probe disables this check, use at your own risk).

    Failed to install GRUB!!!

I have used the 32 bit Clonezilla many times. So, that shouldn't be the issue. What is the entire grub fail error?

  • I plugged in the source and target drive to sata ports. When I connected the target drive via USB Clonezilla couldn't find it.

Previously the target drive had Windows 7. I removed all the partitions before I started using EaseUS Partition Master which I thought would leave it clean.

A lot of them may not create a new MSDOS partition table. I would boot from Parted Magic, start the Partition Editor, go to Device -> Partition Table and click Apply. This will create a msdos partition table which should allow grub to install.

This may sound like a lot of work but it is the only answer for a Linux newb :)

Unplug the old usb stick. Plug in new drive and install OMV on it. Make sure it boots but don't set it up. Then boot clonezilla with both drives plugged in. Instead of cloning the whole disk, just clone the first partition.

  • I installed OMV on the target drive and it was bootable.
Using Clonezilla I did a partition to partition as you suggested.
The clone process succeeded but the disk wouldn't boot.
It had a message like Put in a proper boot disk and reboot

BTW I am cloning from a SSD to a SATA drive if that makes any difference

  • Finally got it to work.

I installed OMV to my target disk again.
Using Clonezilla I did a partition to partition clone.
The tutorial I have been following had me using the -k1 option in Expert mode.
This time I left it as the default -k and I now have a bootable larger drive.

    Thanks for all your help!!
