rsnapshot failed to create first weekly backup

  • I have had OMV running for a week and love it!

I set up rsnaphot to run 0 hourly, 7 daily, 4 weekly, 12 monthly, and 3 yearly. The daily backups worked great, but when it was time for the first weekly backup though.....nothing happened.

Looking at the logs I saw the following:

    7/18/2022, 3:00:02 AM

    /usr/bin/rsnapshot -c /var/lib/openmediavault/rsnapshot.d/rsnapshot-9067e745-e95a-4a4c-a465-9b391fb8acb5.conf weekly: started

I see that the weekly runs 30 minutes before the daily, and the last daily of the week had not yet been created. I'm guessing that is why no weekly was created as it believed there was nothing to copy?

Will this just resolve itself next week when there is a daily.6 folder?

That leads me to another question of what time of day do the monthly and yearly backups occur, and does their successful output depend on another folder existing at the time it's run?

I'd hate to miss my yearly because the last monthly had not yet been created and then have to wait a whole year to get it to run again! 8o

  • The way I see it, rsnapshot works very very nicely and has saved my ass many times, but all these weekly, monthly and yearly backups don't necessarily happen at the upcoming time. I have listed my backup directory here, then you can see what I mean

Of course, it is important that the backup resource must be available.

But you can already see that there are exactly 22 days between monthly.0 and monthly.1, which is clearly too short. Since May 22nd I am waiting for a monthly.2.

Maybe the person who adapts rsnapshot to OMV is reading here.

So the conclusion of my yowling, I can't help you, I noticed the inconsistencies in the process though too.

Will this just resolve itself next week when there is a daily.6 folder?

Yes. This is explained on the man page. The number it is copied from is based off the number you are keeping.

    Example:

    retain hourly 6

    retain daily 7

    retain weekly 4

daily.0/ will be copied from hourly.5/, and weekly.0/ will be copied from daily.6/

hourly.0/ will be rsynced directly from the filesystem.

The yearly snapshot is always run on Jan 1 and the monthly snapshot is always taken on the first of the month. https://github.com/OpenMediaVa…in/omv-rsnapshot-conf#L60
