Problem installing promox kernel 6.2

  • Hi guys!

I hope everyone is ok and that life is treating you well!!

Been going round in circles for some time...

I have backed up my old system on this computer and decided with a fresh install of OMV6 on this hardware:

Chassis: Fractal Design Define XL R2 Black Pearl

    Mobo: ASUS X99-M WS/SE, Socket-2011-3

CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2620 V4 Processor

    Samsung - DDR4 - 32 GB - DIMM 288-pin 2400 MHz / PC4-19200, CL17, 1.2 V, ECC

System Drive: Samsung 960 EVO 250GB M.2 PCIe SSD

    Cooling CPU: Noctua NH-D15

    PSU: XFX 850W Semi Modular

I tried with a standard install and tried installing proxmox kernel 6.2 but that just caused all sorts of problems when loading....

I tried several fresh installs and gave up with standard on this machine...

I installed uefi version and proceeded to try and install plugins....

    omv extras......then the flash memory....

I then tried the promox 6,2 kernel again and it worked up and till a fashion...it starts "loading initial ramdisk" and stops there....

Now the weirdest thing is I could get into OMV user interface - but I couldn't basically do anything....couldn't update anything or connect via PuTTy

So I installed the 5.19 kernel and that works fin....have added zfs plugin and my pools are there and working...

My question is...why can I not get the Promox 6.2 working?

  • Hi,

    My first post :)

The same behaviour on Wyse Thin Client 5020 DX0Q running latest OMV 6.3.7:

    - It works fine on pve-kernel-6.2.6-1.

    - It stops on "loading initial ramdisk" on pve-kernel-6.2.9-1.

I was able to boot the 6.2.9 in recovery mode, then run "systemctl default".

As a temporary fix I have set 6.2.6 as the default grub boot entry for now.

The 6.2 kernel is the proxmox test kernel and right now is very bleeding edge. So, it is possible it has issues. I am running the 6.2 kernel on my dev VM and it is fine but it isn't uefi. With older systems like these, there isn't much need for 6.2 though. I would stick with 5.19 for a while longer.

It seems to be something with this Xeon or motherboard

I will try it on my xeon board (e5-2697v3) tonight. The 6.1 proxmox kernel has been flawless on it.

I will say the latest bios update for this motherboard is 4001 and that is installed but from 2019...

I have an AsrockRack EPC612D8 board and the bios is from 2018 which is the last they released.

  • Hi again!

I have other servers that have ZFS and all of those have upgraded to the 6.2 kernel no problems...

Just wondering if I put 0MV5 back on the computer and try the upgrade which has worked for all the others...

No. I have no idea why this would "fix" anything. I forgot to reboot my server last night for the 6.2 kernel. What is the problem running the 5.19 kernel?

I upgraded my dev VM to the 6.2.9 kernel and it isn't booting either. Boots fine on 6.1 and 6.2.6.

  • 6.2.11-1    is working fine for me on a Supermicro x10dal-i and a x10sdv-4c-tln2f.
