Docker stopped working

I had a running docker Installation with several containers. After some update, it suddenly stopped working. I can not get it up and running again. Re-install docker in the compose plugin fails as well. It simply does not move past following point:

Purging configuration files for containerd. io (1.6.24-1) ...
