I have set up SMB folders on OMV according to the guide and shared them via SMB. Unfortunately, I was unable to access the folders from any device, whether Mac, Windows or Android. The server was always found, but access to the folders was denied. I tried all the suggestions from all the threads and information I found on the internet. I have tried everything: ACL, same username as in clientpc, all settings for shared folders, users and SMB and so on...
What helped in the end was the info from this thread:
I am Using OMV 4.1.31.-1 (Arrakis). I can connect to my SMB share but I cannot access its content.
In Windows 10 I'm connecting with Map network drive via \\192.168.178.100\Sharetest or \\omvnas\Sharetest. If I provide a wrong password, the drive won't be added. However, with the correct password the drive will be mapped but I cannot open it, it's a "Permission denied" error. From Xubuntu Live I tried something like mount -t cifs -o ver=3.11,user=user1 ... but I get cifs_mount failed w/return…
I used:
chgrp users /srv/dev-...
on the drive where the shared folders are.
I have connected two drives / filesystems. The drive with the ID 1x82... is the one on which the shared folders for SMB are stored.
drwx--x--- 23 root root 4096 Apr 22 23:26 dev-disk-by-uuid-1c824a21-d85c-43b6-a1e7-97e80257c940
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 Apr 21 13:34 dev-disk-by-uuid-28ff5459-fc0e-4030-b4a5-406414618f49
Edit: Both are EXT4 filesystems.
I have noticed that the permissions on both drives are different. But I'm not sure why. Both file systems are mounted via the Omv GUI. What could be the reason that the permissions are different?
After using
chgrp users dev-disk-by-uuid-1c824a21-d85c-43b6-a1e7-97e80257c940/
the output of ls -l is:
drwx--x--- 23 root users 4096 Apr 22 23:26 dev-disk-by-uuid-1c824a21-d85c-43b6-a1e7-97e80257c940
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 Apr 21 13:34 dev-disk-by-uuid-28ff5459-fc0e-4030-b4a5-406414618f49
Now it works. But I don't understand why. I have not found this in any instructions for setting up SMB drives on the OMV. This leads me to conclude that somehow something went wrong during setup or mounting. Should the drive have the "Users" group as owner or is there some other problem here?
I really want to understand why the permissions are different for both drives and why setting chgrp users fixes the access problem.
Thanks
