Nanopi m4v2 successor?

  • Hey Community,

I have been using a NanoPi m4v2 for about 4 years with the official sata-hat with 2x 3.5 HDDs and 2x SDDs NAS and cloud storage, also with lots of other hosting. It works like a charm. Now a friend wants to build one, but the problem is that the Nanopi is really hard to get or really expensive. So is there a successor or similar newer SoC with the ability for a SATA hat or some SATA ports?

I've seen this FriendlyELEC CM3588 NAS kit with 4x M2 slots, which is quite nice, but 2TB+ NVME SSDs are not as cheap as a classic HDD.

I have now looked at some different manufacturers like orangpi, rockpi, etc. but it seems that nobody has anything like a sata hat. I may have missed something, but is there anything like this out there at the moment?

    Thanks and greeting from Germany

  • Hi,

Have you checked the latest ODROID H4 Plus / Ultra models? I found out about those last week and I've been thinking about getting the Plus model for my new NAS project.

No, but this is interesting. I was only looking for arm cpus. I also read this post here on the forum: Why I chose an N100 over a Raspberry PI5

It looks like, the arm and sata story is over now..

Edit: The question is what the power consumption is. From the post, the N100 uses 25.50W to 25.50W with hard drives.

Most of that consumption is hard drives. The consumption of an N100 is the same as that of a Raspberry or any other SBC, watt up, watt down.

This is still a pretty nice setup (cm3588)...

Hey, nice idea. Is it possible to power the 2.5ssd from the board directly? Or which supply you use? Thanks👍

The board is really not designed to power disks (just nvme). I used a spare atx power supply I had sitting around to power them.

You should be able to with the sharerootfs plugin installed.

Using the command line is not the right way. That might force something that doesn't work in the web interface.

    Is there another way?

Create a normal sharedfolder on a data disk and then use the symlink plugin to symlink a path on the os drive to the shared folder.

Since you can't install the sharerootfs plugin properly, the directory choosers won't work. You will just have to type the paths in.

I don't know what your paths are or really what you are trying to do.
