SSD or HDD - Harddrive upgrade

I'm looking at adding another harddrive (internal) in my amd 5600 desktop tower running OMV7. I'm hardwired in, and have modest needs. Mostly files are dumped on the server for sharing, and backup. I'm wired in with cat5 everywhere (1Gbps transfer to my understanding). Spinning hdd r/w @ 200-250MB/s, ssd r/w @ 500-600 MB/s. My lan is rated at 1Gbps... does that mean, I would have faster file transfer speeds if I upgraded to a SSD?

The network transfer speed will be limited to about 110MB/s if your network is gigabit.

Only maybe for lots of tiny files. 1 Gbps networking maxes out at 125 MB/s. So, HDs and SSDs can both saturate it. But since an ssd has such low latency, it can transfer tiny files a bit faster.

Keep in mind that hard drive access speed not only influences the network. Internally it can be useful on the server. For example, to move files between different hard drives or to manage databases in Docker containers, access speed can make a difference.

I tinkered with Dockers a while back, and they are over my head, so no Dockers here. Just a very modest file server is really all I use it for. 90% of my r/w access is from network connected computers. The times files are moved on the server, are backup rotations, and that is scripted. Also most of the files are hardlinked, so minimal there too. I then rsync the files from the server to my USB drive connected to my computer to backup the files, and take them home (off-site backup). All done on a shoe-string budget, but very effectively. My first hdd purchase was a regular desktop 2TB hdd (2-3 yrs old, and still going strong), the cheapest one on sale ATM. So stepping up to a NAS drive, is an upgrade, with longer life, and adding the needed space.

if you are transporting a drive a lot, I would lean toward an SSD/nvme over spinning disk. One drop of a hard drive and ruin it.

The USB drive I bought for transporting back and forth is a Lacie Rugged usb drive. Rubber bumper case etc. It is a valid concern though.

The "cheapest one" may not have much of a warranty and it's internal wear leveling code might be sketchy. Plus there are shady outfits selling SSDs on Amazon for rock bottom prices that are fraudulent. Spend that extra money and get an established brand and model. I personally won't purchase any solid state memory that does not have the name Samsung.

Which one would you use for a NAS? Samsung does not have "NAS-ready" models. Or is that nonsense when you talk about solid state?

Correct, I meant the cheapest one of what I had listed above. Not the cheapest thing I could find.
