You set the root password when you installed OMV. admin is only for logging into the web interface and does not have local login privileges.

ok, but it´s not possible to login with the root user. it´s even not asking for a password... !?

Are you logging in locally or over ssh? If ssh, you might have "permit root login" unchecked. If locally, something is not right...

You need to boot a Debian installer image and go to rescue mode then. This should allow you to reset the password and see if something is broken. Otherwise, you may have to reinstall.

I will first try to uninstall the plugin and make it run after a reinstallation... if this is not working i will try your solution.
by the way... it´s not planned to add this plugin into the Service-List in OMV ? right ?

Are you trying to login using shellinabox? If so, you can't login as root in shellinabox. And no, this plugin isn't ready.

Right, i´m trying to login using shellinabox. i would try to simulate the login as root into shellinabox when i´m connected to OVM over Dyndns. Does this mean i have to create another user with root rights to succesfully simulate this login ?

No need for the other user to have root rights, it just needs the SSH group. You can switch to root via 'su -L'.

He meant a different user like sunseeker. Login as the new user and then execute the su command to switch to root. You can't login as root using shellinabox.

You can login as root with shellinabox. You just need have your arguments line like this:
in this file:
/etc/default/shellinaboxSHELLINABOX_ARGS="--disable-ssl-menu --service=/:SSH --no-beep --linkify=none "This is what gives you root access:--service=/:SSH
Then restart it.

I don't think there is any need to. I think it is more secure to restrict it.

I think localizing it with a firewall rule, 192.168.1.0/24, is good enough. It sets up ssl automatically. Behind 2 firewalls, and ssl, I think you are safe.

i dont think it´s necessary to modify this file. I don´t have a problem with it to create an "external shell user" just for accessing the shell from outside. i tried it successfully and later then su -l to get root rights inside the shell. That´s enough for me.
This way is still quit easier to access the shell from ouside instead of configuring the "Putty-Way"
