Constant writing on USB

  • I have latest omv installed on a USB stick with the flash memory plug-in installed and running, but I still get constant writing on the usb.

Docker is installed to a different drive.

I saw an old thread from years ago saying it's an issue with EXT4, is it still a thing? If I switch to xfs on the usb will it fix the issue?

Can add pics here for some reason.

    Approved the thread.
  • I tried adding

    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,nodiratime,mode=1777,size=1G 0 0

    tmpfs /var/log tmpfs defaults,noatime,nosuid,mode=0755,size=100m 0 0

    or

    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,nosuid 0 0

    tmpfs /var/log tmpfs defaults,noatime,nosuid,size=64m 0 0

to fstab but all it did is break gui access, it didn't fix the constant writes.

I removed the lines and it just made things worse, now I have even more writes.

switching to xfs will not help

your fstab entries are duplicating what flashmemory already does.

flashmemory does not stop all writes and I don't see any excessive writing to sdc in your first graph.

    60gb per day is normal?

Shows how often I read those charts. No, I guess that isn't normal but I don't think it is coming from the OS either. That seems more like a docker container or two is running on the OS drive.

I have the docker directory on a different drive, I only run immich and transmission+vpn and they're both setup to different drives, 1 SSD and 1 HDD.

What steps do you suggest for troubleshooting? Or should I just start from scratch?

You have docker storage and the docker volumes on drives other than the OS? Hard to say where to look next because I don't know anything about your system. Maybe use iotop to figure out process is writing so much. lsof to see what files are open.

  • It's jbd2, constant 600-700kb write, I think I'll just reinstall.

My setup is simple 1 HDD for torrents and smb and 1 SSD for immich.

    Thanks for the help
