Headless install on Terramaster F4-220

  • Hi All,

I have a Terramaster F4-220 I'd like to install OMV on. The NAS has no video , so I can't do a 'regular' install. I need to install to a thumb drive, and then put the thumb drive in the NAS.

What I THOUGHT would work would be to install it to a thumbdrive in a VM. I have a Windows machine with VMWARE Player. I have the option to mount the thumb drive. I ran the install for OMV, selected to install to the 128GB Flash Drive. It went through the install. If I recall, there's a second stage I need to do once it reboots - some basic configuration? It tells me to remove my installation media and reboot.

But basically if I then try to boot the VM from that flash drive, it won't boot. I also tried putting the flash drive in the NAS, it won't boot either (that I can tell - it's not pingable).

Is there some other method or something I'm missing to be able to do a headless installation for a NAS device that has no video card?

    Thanks :)

    Approved the thread.
  • Confirmed the install 'works' as I installed it to the VM inside Windows, and it reboots right into OMV to perform the initial setup, but the USB drive just won't boot :(

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

  • Then its back to dsub method unless you can find some other tips of on the Terramaster forum.

Was afraid of that.. but not so sure it's terramaster specific. I can't even boot the install USB on a VM, so I'm pretty sure it won't boot on a NAS. Any idea why the usb thumb drive I'm writing to isn't booting? I did also try a grub repair using a linux repair O/S and it still won't boot but i'm guessing (??) it's because even if the drive is bootable, there's no operating system or otherwise boot info?

    Thanks :)
