SMB WLAN speed issue!

Hi @ all,

I'm almost finished with configurating my NAS with OMV.

I have noteice one issue:

using SMB I was coping 1Gb file from NAS to Win7 PC over Kable I'm getting 111 Mb/s which is more then perfect for my needs.
But if I'm connected over WLAN I'm getting speed of aprox 7Mb/s (same file, tested with Lenovo X220 win7 & Microsoft surface Pro win 8.1)

Could some one advise what can be the bottel neck and how to speed up the WLAN file transfer speed?

You're are getting very good speed, if youre using 2.4ghz. Maybe you can increase a little but with a 40mhz block in an uncrowded spectrum.
However with 5ghz and 40mhz block you should be able to reach 20-23MB/s, but as I read your router is not capable.

I read something about 1Gb Wlans?

Yes. But you need both the ends on the same standard (router and client 802.11AC). I believe you can reach 60MB/S on those ones. Never had one to test, neither i have adapters.

so you are saing that aprox 7 mb/s over Wlan is good?
whay is it so? Over 1000 Mbit lan I'm getting 110Mb/s
My Wlan is 300Mbit so meens I should theoreticaly have at least 30mb/s isn't it?

Has anyone else this speed on Wlan? Is it realy good speed for Wlan?

Standard 802.11g claimed 54mbit 8 years ago? Truth is barely passed 20-30mbit.
This is wireless is a different village from wired. You can Google wifi real performance.

John, subzero is not screwing with you, net data saturation on wifi is much lower than what you get with cable.

subzero79 hat recht. IEEE 802.11g entspricht Durchsatz brutto maximal 54 Mbit/s, also theoretisch ca. 6,5 MByte/s. Im Idealfall! Da bist Du sehr nahe dran ...

Du könntest versuchen, auf einen Kanal zu gehen, wo beiderseits 2 Kanäle frei sind, aber das wird auch nichts oder nur sehr wenig bringen.
Nun können zwar beide Geräte (Dein Router und Deine Notebooks) auch IEEE 802.11n; aber damit scheinen sie keine Verbindung herstellen zu können. Dann wären theoretisch brutto 600 Mbit/s drin, das würde ca. 75 MByte/s bedeuten, aber wiederum auch nur im Idealfall. Netto wären sehr wahrscheinlich so um die 30 MByte/s drin. Schneller geht das technisch nicht. Ich selbst besitze keine Geräte, mit denen ich diese Hardware-Konstellation testen könnte.

I agree as well. You may also have a lot of interference from where your wireless router is and your devices. If there are other wireless signals nearby using the same channel try changing yours to a different channel that is less congested.

Reading some interesting things about WiFi transfererates now.
It's realy disapointing.
I build up a new NAS system to improve the transfere rates but the improvements are realy poor cause of WiFi performance.

du schreibst über IEEE 802.11n gibt es irgend welche einstellungen die ich vornehmen könnte um auf IEEE 802.11n zu schalte( denn 15-25Mb/s wären optimal für meine Anwendungen.)?

eng.: Could you please advise how can i adjust my router+notebook to connect via IEEE 802.11n?

You should've read more in forums, reviews, etc. Those numbers in router/AP boxes are pure marketing. The standard AC which claims more speed than wired Gbit, is only using special AC adapters with 3x3 antennas, pcie or usb3. They said 1.3Gbs but that's because they sum up 2.4 and 5Ghz speed, another marketing trap.

Do you need gigabit speed? then I recommend you to spend money in a decent switch, cable and a crimper

no, i'm happy with performance on the cable.

Omavoss was writing that, with IEEE 802.11n is theoreticaly possible to speed WLAN performance. so I'm wondering if I can adjust my HW to use IEEE 802.11n and to have at least a bit more then 10mb/s. What do u think is it possible or should I just live with my current situation?

Either your hardware supports Wlan n, or it doesn't. Both your Router and your PC/Laptop have to support it.

If you're getting 7MB/s you're on 802.11n. You can reach 9MB/s probably with a 40Mhz channel width in uncrowded space around your area. Try to deactivate encryption if that helps.

Besides that get a router with 5ghz band and check that your devices are 5ghz capable.
Rule of thumbs is advertised speed is 1/3 in real life, real life means other ap near you, interference, obstacles, distance and encryption.

Very disapointed about another one marketing "lie" of router manufacturer.
But anfortunately theris nothing to do about this at the moment. I hope it will be improved in future.

Bitte beachte, dass in Deinem bisherigen Router ein Kabelmodem eingebaut ist, weil du offenbar Internet über einen Kabelanschluss beziehst. Dafür sind die am Ende auf dieser Seite angeführten Geräte nicht geeignet. Es gibt aber z.B. von AVM auch eine Fritz!Box für Kabel-Internet mit WLAN IEEE 802.11ac UND 5 GHz. Das müssen aber dann auch Deine Clients (Notebooks) können. Des weiteren wird an einer noch schnelleren "Norm" gearbeitet, die einen noch höheren Durchsatz ermöglichen soll ... inkl. dann auch neuer Hardware.

danke. gibt es eine schnelle Methode es rauszufinden ob meine clients ac unterstützen ohne HW Datenbläter zu wälzen(z.B über Geräte manager- git es da irgend wo ei n hinweis drauf)?

Hi, besser spät als garnicht:

nein, schneller als Handbuch lesen geht nicht. Meistens sind die technischen Spezifikationen auf einer einzigen Seite (Tabelle) zusammengefasst.

Denke bitte auch daran, das die von AVM angebotene Kabel-Fritzbox evtl. NICHT für Kabeldeutschland geeignet ist! Falls das stimmt (was ich nicht nachprüfen kann) müsstest du dich nach einer alternative umsehen.

Die Kabelfritzboxen (die alte und die neue) funktionieren bei KD nur wenn sie ueber KD erworben wurden/gemietet sind.
