Excessive temperature

  • Hello,

I have mount a NAS server 1 year ago on FreeNas server. The NAS works well but I didn't like reporting. I reinstall the system with OpenMEdiaVault. The system work well except temperature. I test a big copy between two disk (with one in RAID6 and USB3). And the system down. My PC reboot because excessve temperature.

I don't understand why my PC can't support the system.

For information, bios configuration, hardware configuration is identical.

Do you have an idea ? FAN speed ? disk configuration ?

    Thanks,

    Fabrice MOULIN-NEXON

What motherboard and cpu? What case?

Are you sure your cpu heatsink is attached correctly with good thermal compound? Is the heatsink big enough?

Is the motherboard chipset heatsink attached? I have seen those fall off.

Are you using a usb stick for the OMV OS? If so, it could be failing.

What are the temps of the drives?

    ###CPU
I repeat the system is identical, no cahnge on cpu configuration/heatsink, ... all hardware.

    ###motherboard chipset heatsink
    it's present

    ### system install
I install system on a sata hard disk

Just because it is the same system doesn't mean that the heatsink may not be seated right. I have seem them lift and cause the processor to overheat.

Try modprobe k8temp or modprobe k10temp to show the cpu temps with sensors. The nouveau temp is high but it may not be right. If it is right, that is probably causing your lockups. The heatsink may not be seated right, could be failing, or too dusty.

I would also install the backports 3.16 kernel (button in omv-extras to install). This may use better drivers allowing for lower temps and/or less lockups.

  • I verify all heatsink and it's ok.

the problem is when I use intensively processor with a big copy (1To).

Now, I don't view another solution except return on Freenas :(

I understand that large file copies cause the issue. Did you load the processor modules to verify cpu temp? Did you install the backports kernel? An old driver in the 3.2 kernel could be causing the problem. That is why I highly recommend the 3.16 backports kernel. I find it hard to believe that we can't fix the problem in Linux (OMV) but FreeNAS is ok...

  • thanks for your answer.

I don't sure to understand what's backports kernell.

Do you want I install this
    apt-get install linux-image-3.16.bpo.pae

I'm sorry, I'm a Newby with OpenMediaVault. Yesterday, I install lm-sensors. after a simple reboot, the package was volatilized ;)

I test this command in the evening

    • Offizieller Beitrag

No, don't use that command. Install omv-extras and the click on the Install Backports button in the kernel tab.

  • I install backport and first boot crash... After reboting, I launch the copy and AMAZING !!!! the temperature stay stable !!!!
After 10 minutes of copy, the system crash because it tries write on bad adress location ....

Do I have installed Linux Header ?

    I'm realizing a new test ...

EDIT : before copying, I load modprobe k8temp

    • Offizieller Beitrag

The linux-headers are installed with the backports kernel.

Did you also check for Dust 8o ?

  • I would thank you everyone for support. My system is now stable !! I'm copying last saving.

The solution was install backport and built RAID system before copying.

    Now, I'm test the stability.

    See you.
