So at this point is there anything specific I *need* to install that would be missing from the initial setup?
Try ifconfig up eth0,
then dhclient eth0
check with ifconfig again

You need to fetch the debian security and standard updates, that image was built some time ago near end of last year. They should be displayed at the update manager. Also configure the network in the webui of omv, set the interface of eth0 to DHCP.
Once you finish with your updates, go to the guide section on how to move to omv 2.1.

Just so you don't run into another issue of typing the wrong command... when you get to that point, it's omv-release-upgrade (not update)...
Glad you appear to be on your way to resolving this.

Right, that's what I'm running and that currently isn't working.

I should probably move this to a different thread though, it's off topic from the OP

try apt-get dist-upgrade
You might need to run omv-release-upgrade after that.

and then omv-release-upgrade does the same, doesn't install OMV.
apt-get -f install does nothing either.
Should I try removing the package?
well, I wouldn't have expected it to if apt-get dist-upgrade didn't work... but I'm really surprised that didn't work. the -f switch only attempts to resolve dependency errors...
Can you post
dpkg --get-selections | grep hold
And please don't quote nested posts, makes it really hard to read
Nevermind... that wouldn't be it.
I don't know....that image has indeed extras pre-installed. Let's see what he outputs, otherwise he can unhold
I dunno, I never had trouble upgrading w/ omv-extras in place... but I never tried to use that backported ISO either..
Hmm, I think it's that omv-extras repo.
Then
cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/omv-extras-org-*
