[SOLVED] Migrating Data and Grow Up a Raid 5 Array

  • Hi all,
I have an HP Microserver 40L, OMV installed on a 320gb disk, latest version.
Since yesterday, I had only 1 disk for data installed, Seagate 2TB. Today I growed up my system with 3 Seagate 2TB disks. I created a 3 disks Raid 5, FS ext4.

Now i want to migrate all the data saved in the first disk to the new raid array, then wipe the first disk, add it to the raid array (upgrade button in gui), expand the filesystem.

Are these passes correct, so i don't loose my data?

    Thanks for your help.

That is the correct way to do it. I have done it many times. There is still a small chance of data loss when adding the drive to the raid array. I would backup the data if you can. I would also recommend practicing the process in a virtual machine before doing it on the real system.

Since you can't back it up, that makes practicing what you are going to do even more important. If you setup four 8 GB drives in virtualbox, you can simulate the changes on a smaller scale and it happens fast.

  • Tried everything in a virtual machine... all was ok

Now i have a little problem on the physical machine... I know that's a stupi thing, but... it's making me crazy... I can't wipe the first disk because I'm not able to delete a shared folder!!! I disabled all the services (SMB, Torrent, ecc...), I don't know why I can't delete the shared folder of the first disk.

    Anybody can help me?

  • Did you make sure the shared folder or folders are not in use by any of the users or groups you may have set up? Because as I recall it is a several step process, users, groups, samba shares and so forth.

  • DONE, it was the torrent plugin... It was disabled, but you need to change also all the folders that point to the shared one.

Now the raid it's adding the old disk.... very very very slowly... about 2 days... maybe this evening it will finish... then i will expand the filesystem.

I will tell you the results.

  • Glad you got it figured out and thank you for sharing your fix.
