Reach OMV from WAN without porting

  • Hello
I was wondering if I could make OMV reachable from WAN without porting so I wouldn't have security problems.
Like in Synology NAS there is a QuickConnect ID. What it does is it connects to the internet with a software and I can log in from everywhere. Like GoogleCloud.
I know there is Nextcloud but firstly now it doesn't work for me (don't know why) and Nextcloud doesn't have this.

    Thank for your answers!
    Matt

No. omv offers no cloud outgoing service. You will have to look for a third party solution (paid probably) or implement your own.
A vpn tunnel link with certificate is your best option imo.

  • In case someone stumbles upon this thread, here are 2 solutions:

    1. Use a self hosted VPN (requires port forwarding): I recommend WireGuard. I have WG set up on my MikroTik switch that my server is connected to, but you can set up a WireGuard server where OMV is running. (Alternatively: OpenVPN)
    2. NordVPN Meshnet: NordVPN made Meshnet free claiming that the infrastructure is already present, and Meshnet doesn't have big impact on their servers. This solution requires a NordVPN account, and after installing the NordVPN client on your server (and logging in), you just connect to the Meshnet network. On your other device (e.g. phone) you can also download NordVPN, and in the Meshnet tab you can connect to it. This is essentially a VPN connection between your devices, but without port forwarding. Similar to TailScale or ZeroTier.
  • Tailscale inside a Docker container; no port forwarding required.
