If you're putting it in a SM chassis, then a SM PSU of course. The SQ PSU's are what you want as they are the quiet ones.

SO I am struggling with what power supply to get. I have an SSD and 8 storage drives, so I need a power supply with enough modular rails to support all of that. Can anyone recommend a good one? I looked into the ones mentioned here but I didn't see any that had enough rails to support that many drives.

Edit: Did find these 2 that would support 10x SATA. Thoughts? The Platinum version is $20 difference from the Gold, is the Platinum worth the extra money, or is the gold version enough for my needs?

Why are the number of rails important? As long the power supply has 9 sata power connectors, you should be fine. I had 20 hard drives and 8 SSDs on this power supply - https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod…_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. And this power supply (single rail) has worked well on two of my systems and would be enough for your system (would need 3 4pin molex to sata adapters though) - https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod…h_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

Thanks for the comments as always ryan. The 2 supplies that I found and edited into my post was after your reply to my initial post. What do you think of the ones I listed? I wouldn't want to go less than 650W with the E-1650 that will be in this build.

Those are both good power supplies but expensive and I don't think you need power supplies that big. My main server has an E5-2697v3 (145 W TDP vs e1650's 135W TDP), four hard drives, four SSDs, and one NVME drive and it never uses even close to the full PSU.

I appreciate you. The link to the one you used (https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod…_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) is out of stock and only being offered used. I checked NewEgg and found it (https://www.newegg.com/evga-su…klink=true#scrollFullInfo) but the reviews there are much different than the ones on Amazon, and are a bit concerning. Can you recommend a different one but similar to what you used that would work? Trying to purchase the rest of the components I need to finally complete this build after so long

Awesome thanks so much for all the advice (across the entire thread). One extra question concerning OMV itself, I will probably be building this system completely within the next month or 2, is OMV 5.x the way to go right now, or is there a reason I should stick with OMV 4.x? I am trying not to have to redo work in the coming months so would prefer to be on the latest and greatest if your opinion is it is stable enough. And what is the upgrade procedure for OMV 5.x when updates are released? Is it just a few clicks in the GUI to update? Command line updates? Full rebuild with a new build version?

I did settle on a power supply @jollyrogr thanks for weighing in though
I finally have all the parts in house and ready to start putting it together. Now I have the question about how to partition these drives. So there are 8 drives, all 8 TB each, I was initially thinking saving 2 drives as parity to be able to withstand 2 drives failing, but not sure if that is overkill? Thoughts? Also I watched some videos a while back from TechnoDadLife about using UnionFS/SnapRAID but this was a while back with OMV 4.x. I have seen talk about MergeFS as well, just want to make sure I have the right focus initially when setting this up, want to get it right the first time

UnionFS is implemented in OMV with mergerfs.
I run two parity drives with seven data drives. I don't think it is overkill.

OK so you are running almost the same setup as me, excellent. So for implementation, just go with UnionFS and SnapRAID?

I run mergerfs configured by hand, not with the plugin. I use the SnapRaid plugin but the only time I use it is when I add a new drive which is about once a year. I could do that by hand as well.

Because, at the time (years ago) the plugin didn't offer the flexibility I required.
My mergerfs configuration hasn't changed since I implemented it. I can add or subtract disks without changing the configuration, something that couldn't be done via the plugin.

I configure mergerfs by hand in /etc/fstab as well due to plugin only configuring on the drive level, not the share level.
I don't think it's possible to configure snapraid by hand since the plugin owns the configuration file? So i just use the plugin to make configuration changes - all other snapraid administration is done via terminal.
