• hello all . I'm a little noob whit raid, and i do have some question. I want to build a new nas whit one ssd 128 for omw one ssd 512 for all data docker. And for now 1x6 tb hdd plus 1x4tb for.media file.

My question is. What is the best raid for media hdd 6tb and 4 tb knowing I want to add more hdd on the way. I do not care more for parity but I do not dismiss. Once I made a raid config can I add more hdd latter ?

    Thanks.

  • Hi, without IT knowhow I would NOT recommend any software RAID based configuration. This is just asking for data loss!

omv 6.9.6-2 (Shaitan) on RPi CM4/4GB with 64bit Kernel 6.1.21-v8+

2x 6TB 3.5'' HDDs (CMR) formatted with ext4 via 2port PCIe SATA card with ASM1061R chipset providing hardware supported RAID1

omv 6.9.3-1 (Shaitan) on RPi4/4GB with 32bit Kernel 5.10.63 and WittyPi 3 V2 RTC HAT

    2x 3TB 3.5'' HDDs (CMR) formatted with ext4 in Icy Box IB-RD3662-C31 / hardware supported RAID1

To use disks with different size is difficult in a "classic" raid solution. If you want to create a software raid in OMV (mdadm) you can only use the size of the smallest disk for all disks, in your case 2x 4TB. And with two disks the only valuable configuration in a NAS is a mirror. That means out of 10 TB disk space only 4TB remains.

You should have a look at the unionfs plugin where you can pool disks of different size under a common mount point. And you have the possibility to add more disks later.

  • no my point was for clarification to petrut85

IT terminology & background is required to translate "with two disks the only valuable configuration in a NAS is a mirror." into RAID1

  • mi-hol: I assumed that petrut85 has a basic knowledge of the different raid variants, if he asks for a raid suggestion.
