Where is .bashrc file?

  • I created a new user but the first time I logged in with ssh, a message said that it couldn't find the path to its home (hadn't created it yet) under / home / user.

I want to modify the bashrc file of that user to be able to add the line that gives colors when I connect through ssh (export LS_OPTIONS = '- color = auto'). But I don't know where that file is.

For the root user, it is in /root/.bashrc but for the new user, having no home, I don't know where it is.

I have created the home folder of that user and added the same file that root has but it does not seem to be working.

Where is the .bashrc file located for new users?

When you create a new user, a skeleton bashrc is created from /etc/skel/.bashrc IF the user has a home directory. If you don't enable home directories (in User Management -> Settings), then the user won't have a home directory and not have any .bashrc or profile. If you enable home directories, then the .bashrc will be in the shared folder you select under the user's name.

  • I'm having this same problem and looking for the section on home directories to understand how to set them up, This is what the manual says under Users>Settings for OMV 7:

    Zitat

    Settings

Option to select a shared folder as root for home folders for new users created in the
web interface. Previously existing users created before enabling this setting will not have
their home folders moved to this new location. You can manually edit /etc/passwd
to point them to the new location. Also existing users data in default linux location /home
    has to be moved manually

If all you want to do is enable /home/<username> for your user, does it suffice to "enable" home directories and put `/home` for the location? It seems like it wants you to put a shared folder under location. Just leave it enabled with location set to "none" to enable /home/<username>?

  • i come with this problerm too due the very minimal and weak documentation..

    1. If you dont enable user home directories, and created an user..
      1. such user will NOT have a home if you use the OVM web ui
      2. such user WILL HAVE A HOME if you create it using Debian command line user tools and will be at "/home" directory
    2. If you already enable user home directories, and created an user..
      1. user directory will be created at the home chosen share resource if you create using OMV web gui
      2. user directory will be created at the root fs home directory if you use Debian user command management tools

This behaviour is so important and it doe snot have any documentation, so i opened an issue at github documentation at https://github.com/openmediava…ediavault-docs/issues/138

It would be better if you help the project by contributing to the documentation.

I can not do everything on my own. Some help from the community would be great. Without help from the community the documentation will be as it is.
