Long disk-to-disk copying

  • Hi everyone,

I'm planning to run a long copy of 1To disk to disk mounted on my Pi. Knowing that copies are slow on the Pi, I would like to be able to power off the remote PC during the copy.

If I start the copy from a console and close it, will the copy continue?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm a Linux noob.

  • Here's how I do this.

SSH into the server from a remote machine.

Start a screen session on the server by running the screen program. Install screen if not already installed.

    Start the copy.

Disconnect from the screen session. The copy will continue in the detached screen session.

Log out of the SSH session. Shut the remote machine off if you want to.

To check progress of the copy, SSH back into the server and resume the screen session.

See the screen man page for how to detach from or resume a screen session.
