Blackview Mini PC - Upon New Install, No Ethernet, No IP address

  • Blackview Mini PC, 8GB RAM, 512 GB SSD

Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 15)

OMV seems to install just fine, no IP info is given when rebooted.

With a monitor connected, I can type 'IP address' and see the loopback is UP, and (ethernet) enp1s0 + (wireless) wlp2s0 are DOWN.

When I attempt to configure the network via omv-firstaid I can successfully set up wireless, but ethernet fails with the following message:

    Generic FE-GE Realtek PHY r8169-0-100:00: r8169_apply_firmware failed: -110

    Generic FE-GE Realtek PHY r8169-0-100:00: phy_poll_reset failed: -110

at this point I have no IP address, and omv-firstaid no longer sees the wireless adapter as an option to reconfigure :(

I can install/start again and get to a point where I have wireless access again, but ethernet never works except during installation.

I think the driver being put in place (driver=r8169) may not be the optimal one.

Googling has brought me to this page of updated drivers more than once, but I don't know the method to install it.

Any help getting this ethernet to work would be appreciated, amigos.

    Hat das Thema freigeschaltet.
  • Blackview there are quite a few mini PCs. What kind of Blackview is it? What kind of CPU is installed?

I would first activate the backports via OMV's web interface. OMV->System->omv-extras->enable Backports

    or via ssh

    sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

    Insert the line

    deb http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-backports main contrib non-free

then save with ctrl+o and exit with ctrl+x nano. The firmware package is from 2023. Then I would install the firmware-realtek (20230210-5~bpo11+1) [non-free] from the backports via ssh.

    sudo apt-get update

    sudo apt-get install firmware-realtek

    sudo reboot

    Per Download:

    Debian -- Paket-Download-Auswahl -- firmware-realtek_20230210-5~bpo11+1_all.deb

  • Thx for the helpful reply mischka.

I installed OMV-EXTRAS, enabled backports, and added the non-free backports to the sources.list via SSH as you suggested.

It reports same version is already installed?

    Code
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install firmware-realtek
firmware-realtek is already the newest version (20230210-5~bpo11+1).

There was one additional update available after adding the backports.

    firmware-ath9k-htc 1.4.0-108-gd856466+dfsg1-1.3~bpo11+1

firmware for AR7010 and AR9271 USB wireless adapters

After installing the update the ethernet controller still fails using OMV-FIRSTAID to config, and I have to reinstall to get wifi/ssh working again.

  • Maybe it helps to install the RTL8168 driver and blacklist the RTL8169 driver, see:

    sudo apt-get install r8168-dkms

    echo "blacklist r8169" > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-r8169.conf

    sudo reboot

    tutorialforlinux.com

  • that suggestion made the ethernet controller disappear.

  • This can be reversed. The line Remove "Blacklist R8169" in

    /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-r8169.conf

    sudo apt purge r8168-dkms

    sudo reboot

The last thing I would try would be to install the pve kernel. Install OMV > plugin >Openmediavault kernel and then Proxmox kernel 6.2.x install, restart and run omv-firstaid in the terminal, edit the Network.

  • Nothing but trouble.

I enabled/disabled the 'smart boot' in BIOS and it fell into a boot loop, only booting into BIOS.

thank you again @mischka, I had to return the computer.

I learned a lot in the process of not solving this problem!

Buyer beware, the Blackview MP60 is not a good match for OMV at this point, no ethernet support and buggy BIOS.

A right decision. It only has a connection for one hard drive, if you want storage capacity you would end up with several external USB drives, it doesn't make sense. I don't think it's the right hardware for a NAS unless you're happy with a single hard drive, there are better options.
