is SSH necessary for running OMV6? I have a headless install and access thru the local IP address. I don't use SSH (that I know of) and would like to disable.

How are you "accessing" thru the local IP? If the system is headless, I almost guarantee you are using ssh.
ssh is probably one of the most important things for Linux and safer than just about any other service. If you are really worried, just make sure you have strong passwords and don't expose the ssh port to the internet.

I use WETTY for command line and my web browser to access the OMV GUI login etc. Does that require SSH to be active?

Wetty is SSH, WEbTTY client. So yes, it requires SSH to be active.
However, I would argue it is good to have a SSH client on your PC, in case for some reason you need CLI access and for some reason Wetty fails to start/run properly. Linux and Mac users, can SSH with any terminal client. Windows users, you can use either Putty, or if you don't want to install another app... I believe Windows 10 and 11, you can use Powershell.. much like a Linux terminal client.
