PVE Kernel removed going from 6 to 7 and can't reinstall

  • Hello,

I have upgraded my OMV6 (PVE kernel to version 7) and after some problems already solved in the forum all is fine (plugins were left on version 6 like when I upgraded from 5-6) in the GUI so I had to do

    Code
    sudo rm /usr/sbin/omv-mkaptidx
    wget -O - https://github.com/OpenMediaVault-Plugin-Developers/installScript/raw/master/fix6to7upgrade | sudo bash

I also had the error 502 that I solved with

    Code
    omv-salt stage run deploy

Now I would like to install the PVE kernel verison bask (version 6.5)

I have attached the error message.

Can you please tell me what I do wrong?

It seems Using PVE kernel 6.2 has no problem.

I guess I must configure the kernel but how can I do it?

    Thank you

  • Hi!

    The critical error is :

    Code
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 6.5.13-1-pve (x86_64)
    Consult /var/lib/dkms/zfs/2.1.11/build/make.log for more information.

Recently I made clean installation OMV7 and got the same error when I installed zfs plugin on Debian kernel and then install PVE 6.5.

I did it twice and both times I got that error message.

My suggestion is about incompatibility PVE 6.5 with zfs kernel module provided with Debian kernel.

I solved that with another installation order: kernel plugin and PVE 6.5 in first and after that all other features.

  • Hello,

    Thank you for the answer.

I will use pastebin in the future.

    The error I had is

    Code
    vi /var/lib/dkms/zfs/2.1.11/build/make.log

    DKMS make.log for zfs-2.1.11 for kernel 6.5.13-1-pve (x86_64)
    Tue Mar 12 08:44:54 CET 2024
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
  • For a clean install of OMV7, the best order is:

    install kernel-plugin

    re-boot

    remove all non-proxox kernels

    install zfs plugin

But this will not help marc_al who has an inconsistent system after upgrading form omv6 to omv7.

    Hello,

Your upgrade from omv6 to omv7 has left your system in an inconsistent state. Please post the content of PVEInstall6_5.txt on pastbin.

  • Hello,

Could you please tell me where I could find the file? I didn't see it anywhere

I tried to find it with sudo find /var/ -name PVEInstall6_5.txt

and also on lib, dev, etc, but I don't see the file.

    Thank you

  • It's the file you attached to your first post.

  • Thanks for that. The output suggest you've run into the kind of problem I posted about here: kernel plugin: OMV6 to OMV7 upgrade followed by pve kernel install creates incorrect zfs config

Can you please confirm your OMV6 install was using ZFS + PVE kernel + DKMS driver for veeam and was running as a virtual machine. Can you also confirm if you deleted all debian kernels from OMV6 after installing the PVE kernel. Did you check the version of ZFS running and what DKMS modules were on OMV6 before the upgrade?

  • Hello,

Yes, OMV6 was using ZFS + PVE kernel (there was a DKMS driver for Veeam and for ZFS too ). I didn't remove non PVE kernel (just in case).

I didn't test the ZFS version running before the upgrade but I know it has been updated while in OMV6 (as I had a message telling me I should upgrade my pool for features flags)

  • So you don't actually know whether the PVE version of ZFS was running, or if it was a debian version before you upgraded.

Can please post the output of the following from your current OMV7:

    uname -a

    zfs -V

    dkms status

    dpkg -l | grep zfs

    dpkg -l | grep pve

    dpkg -l | grep openm

    dpkg-l | grep linux

    ls -l /etc/apt/sources.list.d

  • marc_al OK, I've just seen all the outputs you've posted. My first question is did you backup your OMV6 before updating to OMV7? If yes, then I would be inclined to restore to your OMV6. Your OMV6 needed to be cleaned up before attempting the upgrade.

The upgrade has left your OMV a very inconsistent state.

  • Hello,

    Thank you.

Yes, I have made a backup before. the upgrade. I can restore to the previous state.

    I will do it.

When the restore to OMV6 is complete, please post the same outputs I asked for before.
