Very Slow Transfer Speed on Raspberry Pi 4 with OMV 5

  • Hello

I have different problem. Fast reading RP->PC (70-100) and slow writing PC->RP (8-20) by Samba. Results are the same with ntfs and ext4. There is Windows 10 on PC. Writing from 2 different SSD on PC sometimes can give a little faster speed (30-40) for a small moment.

    Reading from RP with WD20EZRX

Reading from RP with WD40PURZ (NTFS) gaves 80-100.

USB 3 cardreader (microsd 128gb u1 Samsung evo) in second usb 3 port has same problem.

RP 4 4gb + original PU + cooling + 2020-08-20-raspios-buster-arm64 + clean OMV (wo torrents, dockers and other)

    microsd 32gb class 10 u1

WD 2 or 4 tb 3.5 + ugreen SATA3-> USB 3 with external power unit

Same HDDs gaves 110+ directly to PC through USB 3 adapter.

  • There are several possible reasons for speed and data transfer problems, such as outdated hardware or changes to one node or several network segments. You can try disabling all unnecessary features, auto-upload, torrent, etc.

  • hi everyone,

i'am getting the nearly same speeds for writing and reading as pasha4ur

    Write arounfd25-30

    Read 85-110

    RP 4 4gb + original PU + cooling

    microsd 64gb SanDisk Extreme SD XC 3 A2 V30

WD MyBook 12 TB 3.5 ext. powered via USB 3 Port

  • i have the same problem rasp4 omv5 with

Smb/cifs minidlna . With rasp4 with raspian buster with desktop and minidlna and openvpn transfer rates above 100 mb/s

    Usb3 with ssd.

Then i changed enable write cache. No it is 110 mb/s again

this is under storage / disks/ edit.

Shit now it is dropping again from 110 to 25 mb/s

  • write cache was allready enabeld in my case.

    Code
    lsusb -t

    Output:

  • did you try the "SMB Extra Options" mentioned in the post referenced in my signature below?

omv 6.9.6-2 (Shaitan) on RPi CM4/4GB with 64bit Kernel 6.1.21-v8+

2x 6TB 3.5'' HDDs (CMR) formatted with ext4 via 2port PCIe SATA card with ASM1061R chipset providing hardware supported RAID1

omv 6.9.3-1 (Shaitan) on RPi4/4GB with 32bit Kernel 5.10.63 and WittyPi 3 V2 RTC HAT

did you try the "SMB Extra Options" mentioned in the post referenced in my signature below?

just tried it. still around 30 MB/s write max.

Just to mention it again. i´m still running on a ntfs-formated Disk.

  • Jumbo Frame to 9000

    it will ez the CPU

    os. Overclock the CPU

what prevents the conversion to ext4 as already recommended and used in the benchmark I pointed you to?

what prevents the conversion to ext4 as already recommended and used in the benchmark I pointed you to?

    two reasons:

    1. i copied the files to the drive with my windows PC because of my slow writing speed over network when connected to the pi (and would like to keep this option as long as it stays that slow)

    2. the time needed to backup and rewrite everthing back on the the drive after formating it to ext4

and as Birdbox mentiond some post above. he got the the problem with a external drive formated to ext4.

(and i tried ext4 befor i dicided to use ntfs)

    mi-hol

are there any problems with ntfs-formatet drives? do you thing the slow speed in my situation is caused through ntfs?

during the weekend i´ll try to add another exterenal drive with ext4-format and will give it another try.

  • Well, the SMB performance tests confirming that 100MB/s is achievable used ext4 and there are many posts in the forum complaining about ntfs performance.

see for yourself using this search site:forum.openmediavault.org +ntfs +performance +slow

Unfortunately no benchmark data is available to have a conclusion supported by measurable facts yet.

Would you be in position to repeat the benchmark using the same tools used for ntfs (details in post linked in below signature) ?
