now I open the chromiun explorer on the raspberry desktop but there will no longer be any internet page or it does ping any web. I mean, I don't have internet access, but if I enter omv, also cups and also windows shared folders; and in windows I can enter all the shared folders by omv and connect via vnc to the desktop and omv and cups and omv shared folders but the desktop no longer has internet ... what should I do? can you help me with this?

because I've never used linux before and I thought it was easy but ... hehe I'm going from windows to using linux it's not very easy to get used to, however what you say makes sense so I'll try to install debian and delete that raspberry desktop .. .

take a backup of all omv configuration hopefully it works when formatting the disk to install debian ... and hopefully debian is easy

  • Use of OMV on an OS with Desktop is not supported.

The Desktop environment and OMV try to configure the same things (like network) and this will cause issues.

Why don't you use Debian Buster (without desktop).

I already installed debian buster lxde works fine

    install omv 5 works fine

install docker ok ... but ...

Again the internet stopped working, I imagine it does something to the dns (I think) :( I just don't know why this is happening to me, it's very frustrating ... I see all the tutorials on YouTube that is so easy but I problems result ... :( :(

    good...

sorry for my english but i think i am understanding it better ...

You mean I can't install OMV with DOCKER and portainer on ANY other OS and even debian because docker will seek to use something that cannot be shared between OS and omv with docker (like network connection) ?.

to be able to use omv with docker and portainer I have to install only omv as an operating system or debian without a graphical interface, without Desktop?

There is no way to have a functional operating system like debian with programs and others with omv, docker and portainer on the same machine running at the same time.

PLEASE what I need to do is this please advise me what I should do to achieve it please

1 a machine with linux to use sometime that I need, for example debian to use as a test of an operating system that I have never used and see if I can get used to it and stop using windows.

2 a nas server that can use my raid 5 disks to use as backup of my important files from my Windows machines and at the same time upload work files to shared folders such as graphic designs and video editions among others.

3 allow my work team in other countries to enter those shared folders and use or edit all those work files as they need, as if it were a cloud ... (something like google drive or dropbox) for that I had seen that can do with nextcloud

4 connect my printer and share it via cups with all my windows machines

Please tell me if it is mandatory for this to use docker and portainer?

    • Offizieller Beitrag

OMV is based on Debian. If you install from the linked ISO you will get Debian 10 and OMV5 on top of it.

To achieve your goals, you could use OMV and run any other operating system in a VM alongside OMV.

1 as virtual machine (however, as your board is not so powerful a dual boot might be the better option)

2 is the core of OMV

3 can be done, as you mentioned, with nextcloud running in docker

4 can be done by installing cups on debian alongside OMV

    aaaa

ok now if I understand you friend ... install a version of debian where it asks me to choose the desktop environment and avoid any desktop environment gnome, kde, xlde etc ..

I chose without any desktop environment and was left only as a console or terminal.

1 yes! debian 10 was installed without desktop and

2 then by console install omv,

3 mount all the disks and some shared folders

4 update pluging and enter in extras again and click on install docker

5 .... :( It did´nt install docker and again i no longer had internet, only connected or ssh to folders and all the network but no internet ... :( :( they no longer did ping or google ...

I plan to install omv now without devian or anything alone and pure omv

  • FINALLY !!

install omv only with iso image then docker from your repository and then portainer and now if you were able to install everything ...

The bad thing is that it is only a nas now ... I no longer have any debian or anything like that, it only serves to store ... good ...

no matter I will install debian on some other machine to test it :(

now I must start installing nextcloud and configure it ... hopefully I don't have a big problem :o

thank for all your help friend

  • If your machine is powerful enough you can host a vm which has a Linux Desktop distro installed.
